The problem remains in that those population centers are also the political centers. Eastern Oregon still has some seriously nice areas, but ---

Absolutely. Here is something some of our fellow monkeys may not believe. There tons of different ways people discriminate in SEA. Here in Cambodia, the Chinese have "Chinese only" hotels, casinos, and even apartment buildings. Many places have dual pricing, one price for nationals and one for anyone who is a foreigner. In the Philippines, you can advertise for employees, while specifying certain features wanted - long hair, under 25 years of age, 5' 2" or taller, etc. I could go on...

One of the best things I love about living here is, if someone is stupid enough to break into someone else's home and get injured or killed, they get what they deserve. No family of the deceased will be suing you for damages, after the perpetrator is hurt or dead.

And, that is another thing I can't get her to believe me! The conversation goes sort of like this...she refuses to believe she is allowed to have a firearm but cannot protect her home and possessions with it. She thinks the concept is idiotic.
Me: "You can't just shoot them."
Her: "Why? I'm a good shot.
Me: "Yes, but they are not trying to hurt you so..."
Her: "Are they stealing my things? Are they in my house?
    Me: Yes, but...
Her: "And, you're telling me I can't shoot them? That's silly. You got to be wrong. Nobody is that stupid."

Where she is from (Central Asia) if you caught someone breaking into your home or trying to steal your car or etc. and you gave them a good ass beating or even killed them it is totally acceptable. We call them third-world countries but some of their laws make total sense.

The two women were known to the owners already as lesbians and had made several purchases there - it wasn't that Sweetcakes refused to do business with gay or lesbian people. The issue was when they wanted a wedding cake and the owners did not want to participate in the ceremony in deference to their religious beliefs. They still attempted to help their customers by referencing them to another bakery and called on their behalf while the ladies were still in the store. That's what really bothers me about how this case was prosecuted. It wasn't enough that Sweetcakes lost the lawsuit they had to be destroyed by an enormous fine as well.

@Ura-Ki "if you ever get a chance to visit OryGun..."

But, I have! I grew up in Northern Seattle (Ballard), in the old days, pre-Microsoft, when there was only Boeing, Commercial Fishing and Logging. I love the Northwest - I mean - what the hell do you think I came back here for?...certainly wasn't the beer... anyway...I logged my way through a good portion of school in Washington, Alaska and Oregon, logged in Summer and university during the year with part-time jobs. I left in 1976, joining the Army. I went back in 1994 and hated the place. Hell, I jumped at a chance to go to Bosnia in 1995 to get out of there. I realized I was in trouble when I went to a party and only 1 out of 5 people had lived in Seattle longer than 2 years. The place had changed. And, I know Oregon very well...let me rephrase that, I use to know Oregon. I never thought it would change and even considered coming back to it because I knew Seattle and surrounding areas were lost. But, I been through Oregon many a times, down Highway 101, saw whales there the last time I did the drive. It's friggin gorgeous but the problem is the same as Northern California...it's a normal transit way for Californians. They come because the place is beautiful, unique and cheaper and then they ruin the damn place trying to make it into California. Now, what I find interesting is Idaho is full of California 'refugees' but they are NOT trying to change anything - in fact - they are hard-nosed lot and more conservative than the common Idaho folk especially about change. They came here for a reason. They escaped and lived to tell the tale and they don't want the same thing happening here so... so they are sort of our ace-in-the-hole. :) But, yes, I know your lovely state. It is as beautiful as Washington and has less people (which is good!) but it's only downfall (no fault of its own) is it is closer to California than what is healthy and the stink of California travels a long ways.

Geez, peas... I guess my hunch was right... Well, let us hope they receive their just reward in the end.

@Asia-Off-Grid "One of the reasons I will die here."
I can truly understand that and, to be 100% truthful, I had made up my mind to leave again. I lay on the sofa, half-drunk, watching the election returns on my laptop fully expecting in the morning to make the announcement...believe me, no one in this country was more shocked than me when Hillary went down the drain. But, after so many years abroad, I wanted to come back home, maybe I was right and maybe I was wrong - I am still not sure. But, as a fellow expat you will appreciate when I say, it really isn't that great here... I mean, yes, I can buy anything I want (Whoopee!) but any progress I make the government severely rapes me (like this year...don't even ask me!) And, there are so many regulations that I never know if I am in compliance...and no one else does. "None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free." and I am not sure a person can understand that unless you have lived outside the United States.

People here will do almost anything to achieve victim status. It's not just the LGBTBBQEIEIO community. Lots of people here are obsessed with being oppressed while they live in luxury that Emperors couldn't have a hundred years ago. I've even seen people run to make it to a crosswalk to make sure you have to stop for them. The look on their faces tells it all and naturally they are no longer in a hurry once they are actually in the crosswalk.

It really makes me sick. I am no longer of these people.

I also grew up in Seattle... West Seattle, to be specific, and AlaskaChick is a Burien Babe... I left in ‘67 to head to College in Idaho, and came back in ‘70, and imediately went Bush, in the North Cascades, to get away from the Imports, coming north... They made our terrain, A National Park, so then started my Hippy Phase, in a Commune, in the U. District in North Seattle... Started my Married Life & Establishment Living, in ‘73 after a summer in Alaska, as a Traveling Radio Tech... After 18 Years, we totally got sick of what had happened to Seattle, and moved to the Bush of Alaska, in ‘91, and never looked back...We still visit the Seattle area, but would NEVER Live there, again... To much Liberal BS,TO STOMACH, for us Old Folks... It doesn’ get liveable until one goes east of Bandera... If you are Old enough, to remember, Bandera, was an Emergency Airstrip, on. the west side of Snoqualmie Pass...

Among the very last of things I would do in this life is to actually eat a cake that I knew someone else really, truly, didn't want to bake for me. What are these 'gay blades' ....... stupid?

That's why I'm INCREDIBLY polite to anyone who handles my food where I can't see it. I go to the same restaurants, ask for waiters/waitresses that are super good, and also so they will remember that I tip HEAVY. I also tend to pick restaurants with open kitchens (=visibility) when I go somewhere new or a chain.

My Mother in Law is the opposite and treats staff like servants and ALWAYS wants something made off the menu. When we take her out I ALWAYS catch our waiter out of table view and have a chat so they know there will be something extra for their trouble. Not sure about her plate, but I feel pretty confidant that nothing unusual gets in my or Mrs. 3M's food.
