Nothing like a compass attached to a big chunk of steel... and, no I never had one.

 

I've had knives similar but were a waste of time . too frail .
it would be far more advantageous to magnetize the knife blade, and use it as the needle hung from a string at the balance point, or floating it.
This can be done by taking insulated wire , wrapping the steel knife blade and touching either end of the wire to a battery for a split second . this creates an electromagnet and magnetizes the blade .
I do is with screwdrivers all the time . the stronger the voltage the better the magnet. I prefer 12 volt battery for this , but even a 1.5 volt AAA will produce a magnetic charge.
