Slavery never left... there are more slaves now that at any point in human history. I'm not talking about figurative slaves, either. I'm talking about you are owned and can be sold slavery. CNN, for all their bias elsewhere, did a masterful series on this a few years back. Among other things about 50% of the world's chocolate is produced by slavery. Nobody cares because it's in Africa and keeps things cheap. Whenever I hear people blathering about "reparations" I wonder why they are fixated on things that happened a hundred and fifty years ago yet won't lift a finger for those still in chains.
My ancestors came here as indentured servants mid 1900s . It is an answer as to how to deal with people coming to your door needing help . Seems the way to go if you have the means to support them, and provide housing . doesn't mean you have to trust them. Obviously some limits must be in order. NO one deserves a free ride starting with those already living under your roof , especially when there has been so much warning going on for the last several years. leaches are not kicked out , they are eliminated. Proven fact, a leach will publish their findings just like the homeless do now. They will endanger the rest of the group, deliberately or inadvertently.. People willing to work can earn their respect, no one is entitled to respect . Just like God , No one is entitled to His respect . Respect is earned through reverence and obedience to Him .
Indentured servitude wasn't a horrible system - in exchange for room, board, and being taught a skill you work as an assistant. It's really a bartered version of today's vocational training. At the end of the indenturement you had a trade and were ready to look for paid work and off you went. This is where the term journeyman came from.
These days, the ONLY legal indentured servitude in the US is dot mil, both enlistees and officers. They are taught a trade (of sorts) housed and fed until the end of the obligated service, after which they are free to market what they learned, much as apprentices could. In the bad old days, indentured people's indentures could be bought and sold, and violations of the documents of servitude were, ah, severely dealt with.
I was talking about the United States only. I agree, there are more slaves now world wide than ever before.
Actually that is incorrect. Our union apprentices are technically under indentured servitude for the five years they have to complete. They have no say in what jobs they do, where or much of anything else. Basically they have to put their happy face on for five years and not piss off their foreman.
As an Apprentise Blaster, i got all the Fun Jobs, like Goffering for the Driller, mucking the Holes, and Recasting the surplus .MIL M1 Demolition Chain Blocks into the Cardboard Toilet Paper Tubes, to make the Boosters... but I watched, and learned, and after three years, got to show my stuff, to my Mentor, an OLD HardRock Master PowderMan....... My first Job i got to Design, on my own was a 100Yd Stripmine Wall of Granite, he wanted for a Granite Fasaud Customer... Went off without a hitch, only used 150# of Powder, and all Electrically Timed, with varying Delayed Caps... After. that i got farmed out, to a Raod Construction Crew, to setup the Drilling Scheduale, for each semi-weekly Shot, for. a whole Summer... He would come in the night before, and we would Load the holes, and shoot, first. thing in the morning... They would clear the rest of that day, and Repeat... After each shot, he would take me out, and critic my Drill Pattern, by the size, shape, and distribution of the rubble... After that summer, he signed off on my State License Test, when i was just 18 Years Old... When i presented him my State License, he presented me with a NEW Copy of the DuPont Blasters HandBook... One of the proudest days of my life.. He died a few years later, and i miss his Friendship, every day since...
Given the right situation IF I captured forces that were looking to do me harm (roving bands of zombie bikers and or Hello Kitty snowflakes) afterwards I would kill everyone that would pose an obvious threat-the aggressive types,etc in front of the others. After which I would offer them life, food, shelter in exchange for their labor. I could always use help with the garden,etc. I would not abuse them, but if they ever resisted or attempted escape I would simply kill them.
