Probing

After I went to work last night some crack head came buy asking my wife for our WiFi pass word because their truck got repoed and their phone got turned off. Bla bla, bla, not my problem.
All 3 dogs were in and going nuts.
Moma dog is a complety mental pyrenees aussi Sheppard mix. The most agressive of the pack.
Her baby is a non nutered all muscle 80lb mix mut, half of what his mom is plus half newfoundland or st. Barnard mix.
Then my fat old shithook sled dog from northen japan.
She told him we don't have wireless internet.
I have a feeling that's not what they wanted.
Strangely they usually don't come around when I'm there. I will review trail cam pics.
So glad I'm moving away from methville.
What do you think?

 

I'd definitely put up some more exterior warning devices. Do you have no tresspassing signs up?

 

Have her use her phone to take their pic when they stop by.

You would be surprised how that helps keep them away. Also helps identify any if something does walk off. Best use of Facebook I've found! We have a community group for posting like a community watch. You post the pic and get a name and sometimes your stuff back when they try to sell it to someone in the group. Works better than the cops these days, faster too.

 

Stuff like that is why I started packing the big iron and the bowie full time.

 

Meth heads seem to do that kind of thing before they steal, especially if they think no one is home. I would definitely look at getting a picture or a doorbell cam to help if something was to happen.

We have a gate, before anyone can get to my front door. People that know us around here know to call or text before coming over. I know this makes it a hassle, but better than alternative. We have a great pyrenees and a pit boxer mix that have never known anyone but my wife and I. They dont care much for people. I have signs up at the front of the driveway and at the gate before you come into my yard. I would hate to have some meth head come into my yard or anyone for that matter. It would be a bad day.

 

As you suggested....they may be checking reactions (time and what lights get turned on where), who's about, potential threats (to them....i.e. barky, bitey dogs) etc.

Hopefully the dogs will persuade the dude from paying a return visit.

Recommend Maccas free wifry to them....though they will probably cark it from ODing before they have a cholesterol induced cardio pulmonary incident.

I do have that safe door frame still in my front yard and yesterday I scored 6 free industrial wash down safe florescent lights still on my trailer in my front yard.
Probably thinking about stealing some stuff.
The cops here are particularly useless. I'm getting my lights off the trailer and processed for reuse today, testing them all and removing all the bad light tubes, remove the emergency backup light feature.

 

My guess is they were seeing if anyone was home while at the same time looking the place over. I mean, what can you do to them? If you stuck a gun in their face and said "beat it!" you could be arrested as could you if you turn the dogs on them. So, their way of obtaining information was perfectly legal and acceptable in a court of law. Get those 'No Trespassing' signs put up asap! Sounds to me that the dogs probably did the trick though and they will look for greener pastures but stay frosty... May I ask why your wife answered the door for someone she didn't know when you were not home? Perhaps she didn't open the door?

 

She had the chain lock thing on the door and 220+lb of hungry dogs behind her.
So far in 6+ years no one has wanted to tangle with the dogs.

 

Somehow Greeting them with a Cocked an Unlocked .45 ACP 1911 has a far greater deterrence factor than hundreds of pounds of canines. Perhaps it's just my Old Frail appearance holding such a deterrent that keeps the Crackheads at bay?

 

That is one important thing. They saw the dogs and saw that they would be trouble. I think now that they saw huge dogs, they know they will have to deal with them if they ever got in the house. Also a sign that says, "smile for the camera". I have heard that makes criminals think twice.

 

I like the idea of a door chain, but only as an invitation for someone to attempt to kick the boor in.

If they do, the door will open exactly 12" and stop dead when it reaches the 1/2" Mickey Bolt that I can spin into the concrete anchor set flush in the floor.

It only takes moment to spin it in, and then an unwelcome visitor would probably have to blow the hinges off to get through the door.

I've never had the hut!-hut!-hut! boys try to smash my door open, but if my doorstop in place when they did I think it would slow them down quite a bit. The door is a steel fire door. Nothing unusual, but quite sturdy.

As far as kicking the door partially open, if that ever happens, as soon as an arm or leg (or maybe half a body comes thru) it's fair game for any appropriate amount of defensive action.

Including the kind that may leave a few fingers behind for positive fingerprint identification.

 

I have no trespass orders against 2 different individuals, both caught on my camera system first knocking on the door, then taking a tour of things around the house (outside). In both instances the cops suggested the orders after viewing the footage.
We have an epidemic going on in this country with dope, and the preferred method of affording the dope is stealing.

 

I'm outside the city limits of a 1 stoplight town. I'm not friendly enough to have visitors, usually more than once, and if they are invited back a second time, I tell them what to look for to know wether I'm home or not. That being said, I've got a few trip wires spaced out connected to a few loud bangs with possible hot embers depending on how close you get. The no trespassing signs are there for a reason. If they end up getting tripped when I'm not home, I check the trail cams. The deer and dogs are starting to learn not to drop by uninvited.

 

I am with @M118LR on this one. Dogs are brave. Dogs are tough. Dogs are man's best friend with senses far superior to man's but...Crack Heads or any Dope Heads also have firearms and it all boils down to how screwed up they are and/or how bad they want in. I always think of dogs as a major part of the security system, the early warning part and I bet each and every one of those pups would have died for their mistress, giving her time or maybe with luck taking the scumbag out, certainly with 3 they have up the odds considerably, but they are still dogs! Each person's security is their own responsibility and sometimes that responsibility is extended to family, friends, or even the dogs...

When I left the house this morning I told the wife, "There's a gun on the fridge, don't open the door for anyone unless it's Patty (our neighbor). Anyone knocks, get the gun, rack it and tell them you are armed and they need to leave now. Don't open the door." That's my speech that I give every time and I mean every word of it. Whoever is at that door, for whatever reason, should not be there. Sorry, call it too many years in too many bad places but my responsibility is to my wife and family. I have very little if any ideology left. And, so if I am not home and some yo-yo is having a heart attack on my front porch - well - my prayers are with you pal but you should have kept your phone charged...

When I tore the wall out last year I doubled up the studs around the door, there were no jack studs, good thing they don't build them like they used to any more.
The new studs were screwed through the floor stud, through the floor down bottom and up into the header up top with 4 inch deck screws.
Then I put poplar "trim" over the door frame and screwed the trim to the double frame.
They better come at that door like it's going to be the last thing they are ever going to do.

I understand. And, if the world situation changes then I too will have one in the chamber (as I do when I carry) but at home, with doors locked, no. I have Glocks so no safety to move...
