The only gun that can kill you on it's own is one that doesn't work when you need it to, and that's almost always because it's human failed to clean, inspect, replace, and test.

The top and right photos are of Red Cross "meals" being served to evacuates in SouthEast Texas. Bottom left is from a local church with zero disaster budget. The Red Cross is really getting some bad press, well deserved in my opinion. They are inefficient and not transparent . One more reason not to go to a FEMA or Red Cross shelter and prepare for you own. Local churches were the first to respond with shelter, food and clothes. It was a massive effort in my town my the Baptist and Methodist churches with donations pouring in from local individuals They worked together with one providing shelter, another food and another picking up, sorting and delivering donated items. For the first 72 hours it was not the government, but the churches who were there for people, expecting nothing in return.

Well that's the way it's supposed ta be-at least it was when I was growing up. All the churches either banded together or at least coordinated with each other to insure the needs of the community were met. Our church and many others in this AO have a weekly meals program for the old, infirm, or others that are needy. Every Weds our church cooks meals that are 5-6 bux a plate. Alot of us go and eat there and that in turn supports the meal program for those without.

I wonder how much the Red Cross gets reimbursed for each meal. Most people are unaware that the Red Cross is a for profit organization and anything they provide you with will be billed to you or someone else later.

I don't know how current this is, but cherry picked from here -http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/08/30/547435136/red-cross-exec-doesn-t-know-what-portion-of-donations-will-go-directly-to-harvey
"A study released by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, concluded that the Red Cross had spent $124 million — one-quarter of the money donors gave for earthquake relief in Haiti in 2010 — on internal expenses."
For all I know, those internal expenses could be for aircraft fuel for either Haiti relief flights or executive junkets, it is simply not transparent.

I've lost faith in the RC for anything other than being able to muster a grunch (that would be a dozen slews) of volunteers to help with the handouts, however measly they might be, and collecting donations.

Churches have always been at the fore front of helping out in crisis .during the great depression It was the churches that had the soup kitchens people lived on for years .
For over 200 years churches have been at the fore front of helping people with no strings attached, birthed schools ,and medicine, and promoted education . Because Jesus taught us to help one another. The parable of the good samaritan, as well as the fact Jesus healed ,every one that He encountered .
Use to be good samaritan laws protected those who lent a hand, but now days the laws no longer protect them.
I've worked in christian thrift stores and observed people getting stuff. it's quite remarkable .
Most people act like they are owed this assistance ,,and a few actually are thankful, and some want to do something in return , those are the ones I like to offer more assistance too .
People accustomed to using the system ,know all the places that can get free food ,hence we organized with other churches to curb this abuse .
Among 15 volunteers , I was the only paid employee (minimum wage) ,doing all the pick ups and deliveries for the store, using my own gas .

I have family and friends, many ex-military, who have had bad experiences with the Red Cross.
If I give to charity, it's to the Salvation Army - much more of their money goes to help people in need. The brass takes very little.

My Dad told me that while he was in Korea during the war , the Red Cross charged for coffee and donuts, the Salvation Army gave it free to the Marines.
