Is your sidearm able to multitask?

A six inch .44 Magnum Revolver riding on your belt holster can do most everything needed in the woods, but your going to have a hard time concealing it for everyday carry in the Big City. Everyone wants a .22 LR for hunting small game, yet few would consider the 22 LR for personal protection against an armed foe. All we need do is push around a wheelbarrow filled with ammunition & sidearms and the multitasking problem is solved. So what's your solution to the multitasking problem and why? (I'd like to share/ debate the collective knowledge)

I carry a concealed subcompact Glock 30 .45 ACP with a 22 LR conversion in the fanny pack, and a .44 Mag Revolver holstered on the duty belt. (when travelling the woodlands)

 

How about a Taurus Judge , long colt 45 / 2 1/2 inch 410 shells , with anything from bird shot to slugs , even specially designed personal defense shells , in a shoulder holster.

 

revolver in 357 Mag can shoot lightly loaded 38 specials, 38 sp +p, shot shells, up to full house magnum loads with heavy cast bullets. Seems that this may be able to multi task. snakes and rats to hogs and maybe black bears and anything in between.

 

I am with the Ruger security 6 ,357 mag.
Beyond shot shell loads and light to heavy mag loads ,I have plastic Speer loads for fast draw practice .

 

No, but I do not carry to multitask. Taurus Millenium G2 PT111 9mm 12 plus 1 in chamber, spare magazine usually in other front pocket. Conceals nicely, if 25 rounds can't get it done I am deep chit. Has one purpose only. That is why I carry it. If it were allowed and warm enough for a jacket, I would not mind a baseball grenade or 2. I don't like crowds, or cities, I only want to get back to my woods in one healthy piece. As I said, I carry for one reason!

 

Nope. I do not consider my 9mm to be multitask tools, just not heavy enough for the woods...but does the trick in the urban jungle.

 

What about the .327mag,in a rifle or a revolver,I think that would be best. You could then shoot 32acp,.32sw,.32swl,.32hr mag and .327mag in the same weapon,what could be better? I have a ruger single six in .32 hr mag and a charter arms in .327,and trying to find a .327 lever action. Squirrel and rabbits on up to deer or better could be had.

 

Kinda like asking a golfer what ONE club would he use to play all 18 holes?
There's a reason he has a bunch of them in a bag.
Same with guns. Each has it's place, none can "do it all".
And I echo the sentiment on multitools. I have tried many, but carry none. When I need a knife, only a knife will do.

 

I never considered a double duty sidearm.

I carry a Kahr PM9 and NAA WASP for close, personal social purposes only. I always have a rifle within a few steps if I need to do some hunting. But now I'm curious about how the WASP would perform with .22 Magnum shot...if there is such a thing. I could probably do as well with a stout stick.

 

44 caliber revolvers, especially the 44 magnum, can shoot a very wide range of loads including shot. That makes it the most versatile field pistol for me. I would still carry a small 9mm like a shield in shtf since my rifle would be my primary.

 

Well, I guess a 1911 or Glock with a .22 LR conversion kit wouldn't technically be multitasking, as each caliber would be for specific prey. So it's just a way to conserve a few ounces without needing both a 22 & 45. The .44 Mag would be the most utilitarian, but reloading a revolver in a fire fight vs mag feed semi-auto?

 

I have always been interested in obtaining a .44 magnum since I shot one as a kid at a logging camp in Alaska. But, @M118LR point about "...but reloading a revolver in a fire fight vs mag feed semi-auto?" is a valid one.

What about a 10MM (which I know nothing about) or the .50 Desert Eagle (also zero knowledge)? Would either of these be a satisfactory replacement for the .44 magnum in the woods and also do double duty in the urban jungle since both are magazine fed?

 

I carry a big ten almost exclusively now days for just this reason. More power across the board then .357 mag, the ability to also shoot .40 short and weak, and the wide range of bullet weights and power levels make the 10 mm almost perfection! Combined with my beloved 1911 ( greatest pistol design of all time) and you have a real versatile option on you. Even better are the double stack frames from STI and Caspian that make a steller fighting pistol that much more better! My STI holds 17 +1 the first go round, and can handle any power level ammo with out worry! The true test of a pistol round is the FIB windshield test, and 10 mm smokes that test better then almost every pistol round you can get or make!!!

 

I carry .45LC and .357 with me...only reason I would carry a .22LR would be as a back up or for practice, or perhaps in my pack for "foraging". I have no problems shooting a rabbit or coon with either of those cartridges, there is plenty left over to eat.

 

any firearm is better than a rock but as far as multi-tasking? That';s sort of like asking what sort clothing do you wear. Depends on how hot it is, if it's gonna rain or snow, do I have to buy flowers for the event, or am I likely to get eaten by a grizzly bear. I don't mean to dilute your thread, but no, it does not make any sense to me to multitask a carry gun any more than it would suit me to spend a day welding rusty steel while wearing shorts. t-shirt and sandals.

 

Have more than one handgun, but seem to end up with an old Colt 357 revolver I have had for 40 years with 357's, 38's and
Speer plastic bullets, primer powered, I end up doing 90 % of my carrying and shooting with it. Same way I seem to end up with my old Springfield 06 for 90 % of my rifle shooting. Seem to collect other firearms but use my old friends. Never did get into 1911's in the USAF. We carried M1 for main gun and grease guns instead of pistols for close in. So far never have gotten into everyday carry and open carry with a revolver and Springfield seems to elect a much lower level of response from the local law and fellow land owners. Personnel .bias at my age, but if I did find it necessary to carry ever day, I think I would carry a pump shotgun.

 

In the field the .44 mag is far more versatile than a concealed carry gun, so a suppressed .22LR G30 for small game would be used more than the G30 in .45 ACP configuration. In an Urban environment the G30 in .45 ACP configuration would be the go to sidearm.

The only reason I like Glocks is if I ever was given one, there would be lots of folks I could sell it to.
And that is my opinion
Multitasking...better to choose the correct tool for the job.
