@Imasham look for shadow bands. Here is a great video on what to look for. My sons will be viewing the eclipse. One in WY the other in NE.

Traffic on I-5 from Commiefornia North was ridiculous!! But, the first time I've seen State Troopers in numbers out on patrol!

Yup...I am already planning to. I gave a public community presentation today and people were asking about those. Tonight I drove a little further down the interstate to where I will be viewing. It is a truck weigh station and the Idaho DOT has set up six porta potties. The parking lot is already full with people camping overnight. There are many dozens of campers, tenters and RVers, set up in a field across the road from the weigh station. I'll be going there around 9am tomorrow. Skies will be mostly clear!

Note: I took a tour today of an underground cave modified in 1963 into a civil defense bunker. I took a whole bunch of photos and will upload a post with them. My biggest coup: I came away with a completely sealed canister of survival crackers produced in January 1964. There were CASES and CASES of them. Maybe I'll see if I can sell them on eBay! More later.

Glad to see you made it back from behind enemy lines and just in time for the Eclipocalypse...

I wonder how many protests there will be because:
    • President Trump is allowing the eclipse to pass through the red neck and therefor racist states of Idaho, Wyoming and Nebraska and then later in racist Southern States where there are STILL Civil War statues.
    • President Trump is NOT allowing the eclipse in the enlightened blue states like California, Washington, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New York. WTF is up with that?

Watching all this eclipse migration for the Solar Viewing is like watching a train wreck about to happen. The only things in question are the severity of the wreck and the number of casualties. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly and safely for travelers, viewers, truckers, and the various states' highway officials. I am reminded of the Great Hurricane Rita Bug Out of Sept. 2005 from the Houston Gulf Coast area. More people lost their lives from incidents related to the driving and crowded road conditions heading north toward Dallas than were killed by the storm.

As for me, I shall remain in Texas and watch things on TV or online as they transpire from the comfort of my living room with appropriate adult beverages at the ready.

I have about a 30 minute drive South this morning.

I'm right on the edge of the path of totality with about 20 seconds of darkness.

Going to hit the back roads to my buddies house in the county and watch peacefully away from all the people.

And then bend over and kiss my ass good bye

Welcome home, Colt. Home bound traffic is apt to be worse with the idiots that blinded themselves. Take a sandwich and thermos and wait out the blind.

I survived the eclipocalypse. Food and water stores were more than adequate to get me through the shear terror. Not sure how many stores were looted in Portland during the two or so minutes of almost sorta dim light darkness.

I did take a moment during the eclipse to ponder how amazing the odds are that the Moon in it's orbit is that same relative size of the Sun viewed from the Earth in it's orbit. It's also interesting that the sun rotates about every 28 days - approximately the same amount of time it takes for the Moon to orbit the Earth. It's also interesting that the Moon's rotation is exactly as long as it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth.

Pretty long odds for three celestial bodies apparently created by random accident.

I just stuck a hole in a paper plate and let it shine on another one about ten feet away. It worked pretty good. Mrs. 3M and my MIL were watching it on TV - I had to remind them to come outdoors since you could just as easily watch it on TV a thousand miles away.

Our event here in Idaho is all over. We had a successful 36km drive south from our hotel to where we stopped at a truck weigh station. There were thousands of people around us and it was wonderful to experience. The weigh station itself was closed for the day to truck weighing. Having taught and written about astronomy as a newspaper columnist I can tell you all the technical aspects, all of the science, but nothing can prepare you for the emotional experience. To those who pooh poohed the event...you have no idea what you're talking about! The experience was primal...visceral. The temperature in my location dropped significantly, probably 10-15 degrees. The eerieness of the light was astounding and the darkness that came at totality was simply unreal. We could see a 360 degree ring of red around us on the horizon. The corona streams were shimmering and dancing and I saw Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter along with the eclipsed sun. The silence was surprising as nearly everyone was quietly waiting...it was very reverent. Traffic on the interstate was virtually non-existent. The first car left our area about 10 seconds after totality ended!

I15 traffic was very busy as people left our area. We waited about 40 minutes before joining what was left of the queue and it took another 10 minutes to get back onto the interstate. Southbound traffic was very busy. Northbound was heavy but steady until I got back to my exit to go back into the town I am staying in. There is a major highway rest area and gas station in the town that was was completely packed and the highway exits had been closed because there was simply no more room. The police re-opened the exit JUST as I got to it. Traffic continuing northbound however was very, very slow because one lane was closed for construction and so everyone had to merge.

For myself I am very pleased that I got to experience this with my family. My adult daughters now want to go the Antarctic for the December 4, 2021 eclipse!

From this perspective (southern calif.) the moon shaded the sun about 30percent and held it for about 1/2 hour or so .
watched through older welding helmet .
