Facebook AI Creates Its Own Language In Creepy Preview Of Our Potential Future " Facebook shut down an artificial intelligence engine after developers discovered that the AI had created its own unique language that humans can’t understand. Researchers at the Facebook AI Research Lab (FAIR) found that the chatbots had deviated from the script and were communicating in a new language developed without human input. It is as concerning as it is amazing – simultaneously a glimpse of both the awesome and horrifying potential of AI. "
I have one that was used extensively in the Navy lab and in civilian classes. Was in the last class allowed sliderule accuracy rather than requiring 4(!) significant figures precision. Whew!! Dodged that bullet, couldn't afford a calculator, not even a TI throwaway.
Oh the memories of slide rules. 2 times 2 equals 3.9162. That said, the battery never went dead, it is emp proof, never had a problem with viruses, did not require an operating system or constant up dates, is not dependent on programing languages or keyboard etc. The basics of modern civilization were developed with the slide rule. Back in the late 1950's, saw some incredible projects, SR 71, F-104, etc designed with slide rules, log and trig tables out of books. Motomom34, don't know how to take your cartoon. Should it be posted here, in Tinfoil Hat, the Inferno, Communications, Survival,? Kind of wonder if in the communication and information world if I am the lobster in the pot and the water just hasn't got hot enough for me to realize it yot. t
Mine is a Circular Slide Rule... that I had in College, and got me thru Chemistry, just fine.... Then I got mixed up with PunchCards and Computers and ALL HELL, broke Loose.... Never been the same, since... Still can't do RPN...
BTPost, you bring back memories of going to the computer lab at 2 AM to punch up a set of cards to be put into the computer at some time in the future as an under graduate student. You submitted the card deck, it went into the bin to be processed when time was available, usually came back a day or two later with a comment that there was an error in your inputs or in your programming, you then redid the deck, reentered the process and a couple days later hopefully got an answer. The computer was built by Burroughs so of course it was programed in BALGOL as that was "their" language. The professors were trying to have us develop formulas for in my case the drying times of rice, the inter relationships in inputs, water, sun, fertilizer. etc on rice growing, which they then tweaked and published. Often as an ag engineering student, it took a couple of nights, we had access to the computer resources when no one else was using them, It took hours to do statistical work on a project that a few years later could be done on a TI handheld in a couple minutes. Some things just don't work well on a slide rule. Statistics, a lot of chemical and electrical problems, etc. the average high school student has access to more computer resources than I ever had in college in the 1950's and early 1960's.
Chelloveck, we fought WWII using index cards in those crazy pull out file systems and somehow they made it work. In the 1950's in the USAF you looked up a part in a large book, it told you where it was located and where the card for it was located, you went to the file, checked how many parts were at the location, got the part, subtracted 1 from the card, reordered if below some stocking level, and left. As an A/2c, if I screwed up, ie didn't follow all the rules, I got one day of KP in the mess hall, and if that didn't work I would of lost access to the supply area and thus any possibility of promotion. They were very serious about the whole process and making it work. Slide rules, trig tables, index cards, the whole pre computer systems do work very well if very inefficiently.
