Often overlooked is Gas lines or fiber optic RoW that do not run along side of a paved road. Others include power line RoW and other related utilities.

One could use a motorcycle with reenforced rims and an out rigger/side car, for stability , but you'd need an efficient way of getting it on/off the track to get around things, or allow others to pass .

If it were mine, it would be an older yzf450 r. When you gotta go, you gotta go. Tried and true.

In stead of attempting to ride the rails ,why not create a vehicle that can ride the rail ties , a track vehicle of a sort that can also be good for snow as well.
Thing is , one needs to be able to get on and off the track quickly ,and or change direction and be able to travel off the tracks.
Another vehicle would be a hover craft with both a significant lift and thrust.
Track and hover craft, would be great providing solid direction, once off the track directional maneuvering becomes more complex about like standing on a ball. but there is an advantage in going across water and flat land, barring cross winds .
    Weight limits are relevant. .
Hills and gullies can be a significant challenge.

One hover craft problem will crop up on railroad trestles. With the space between the ties wide open, the usual air cushion will go away --

I'm not certain about RR tracks, but I am very much interested in a Quadski.

    And, if you're wondering...$40,000

The hover craft can still have wheel that accommodate a train track . most hover craft have separate engines for thrust and lift.
Although I do like that Quadski concept too.

I dont know if it would be a great idea, but it would be better than any road. Now in Northeast Oklahoma where I once lived, there was really no train track let. In my home town I lived about 200 feet from where the old train track went through and my dad talked about when he was a kid, hobos would be walking the track there. I found a map a while ago that had the old train routes on it, but cant seem to find it again. If I could I would transfer it to a map to print out. The only problem with that is some of the old bridges are gone. You would have to find another way to cross the obstacle that was there.

You may be able to reconstruct it from traces left on Google Earth. If you can find the old rail beds, you can also see which bridges are no longer there.

I have started that project and have most of it that I'm looking for. There is just a few areas that I cant find where it goes.

If you look at the bottom of the screen, there should be a couple clikables that will take you to early editions of the area. Might show there, especially if the shots were taken in a season with less foliage.

Yeah tried that too. The railroad that I'm trying to locate was lasted used around late 60's or early 70's. It's just about 10 miles or so that I cant find.

Last guess would be checking with the local historical society. Some of those old biddies have really remarkable memories and resources. If the rail line is still in existence, they may also have some old maps readily available. But I'll bet you already thot of those --

I dont get to that area but about one a month and its usually on the weekend. Everything that I can get off line is to 1920 or earlier which helps a little but not enough. But no I didnt think of the historical society, so thanks. I know sarcasm when I see it. I been making maps for different applications for about 20 years and using google earth since 2006, so I know a thing or two about getting information from it.

The reality will be altogether different....

Near any major urban area, I believe this will be the norm and not the exception....

Third world people are accustomed to using the rail, if it's there . but if the economy is dumped there will likely be no services except government agencies/military doing their thing.

I've walked tracks and tussles bridges and such . IMO they are no fun to walk.
Rough on shoes and the stride is not comfortable for most folk. I either prefer to walk the rail it's self or the dirt along the side .
As a land mark, to parallel tracks maybe, but not directly on them.
Feature this , you feel alone and minding your own business and the monotony and labor of walking the track you loose your situational awareness and focus on the track an not where it's going. An opportunist sees you coming and waits for your to get with in range. If they miss with the first shot , where you going to hide ?

Maybe I missed something here but couldn't one just ride a mountain bike between the railings or the land/area next to the tracks if there is space besides the rails?
