Draft of All Persons in US Between age 18 and 42

For all those who love Ronald Reagan, here's one of his quotes that I happen to agree with.

I'd say what I think about this, but there may be children on this street!

 

While I could see some excelent point for a draft, I think my overall objection to the idea is pretty well covered by the Ronni quote BJ posted. Forced service in a free country just somehow dont seem to mesh well for me.

 

Hell, I quit counting! I just know that after 23 years, my back hurts!
On a serious note, my objection to a draft is that we will end up with people that don't want to be here. We have about 40 IRR soldiers that were involuntarily brought back on AD, about 1/3 are good Soldiers that are holding their weight. The other 2/3 are lazy and don't do anything to help others, just complain when they don't get the goody benefit that those who work their tail off get.
I would hate to be stuck in a foxhole with sosmeone that hates having been made to do something that they don't want to do. It's a fine line because if we don't get some kind of relief real soon, this volunteer military is going to begin suffring greatly.

 

I know this is a touchy subject, and I'm not 100% solid in my stance, and what you said was true in my case, but Ghrit, step back and listen to what you just said..... basically, we have to make them slaves so they appreciate their freedom (if they survive).

Might conscription be necessary at some point? Sure.... but then you can't say that we're a free country, you just can't.

I think the answer might be to make "volunteer soldier" a much more rewarding job. If it's as important as we say it is, then surely we can cough up the extra cash, right?

I'm open to all points of view on this as, like I said, I'm not completely sure of my stance on the whole issue.

 

Blackjack, how much of your taxes are you willing to pay to make volunteers happy enough to sustain a force? What programs are we willing to cut back on to get the money? Education? Transportation?

 

Answer: Much more than I'm willing to pay to the politicians and the millions of pork programs. Why do we have to take away from important things like trans and education, why can't we take the money away from the bullshit programs?

There is a serious lack of priority regarding who gets paid what in this country. Soldier (and policeman) should be prestigious jobs with ample compensation.... but their not, and will never be.

How much does this society value fake boobs (Anna Nicole), basketball players and rap stars over people who serve us with their lives at risk (You, and formerly me).

You said it yourself, you don't want someone in combat next to you if they don't really want to be there, neither would I, so conscription certainly isn't the answer. What the answer is I really don't know, but I know that forced servitude is not the answer in a free society. The two cannot logically co-exist.

 

I completely understand your points Ghrit, and like I said, I'm not at all solid on my stance here, but it's probably one I'm gonna take a while to come around on.

The whole "making someone risk their life involuntarily" thing in a free society is just a hangup I'm not having much luck getting around.

 

I went in at 18,was a combat Vet at 19..and stayed on active duty as a Scout till I was 22.Got out went to college at night,got a good job etc.I went back as a Scout last year in the National Guard in the Texas,36th Infantry Division.
People keep asking me why I went back knowing I will see a tour somewhere else..
Simply,I got tired of watching these young folks getting killed.I figure they needed help so,I came back to help..and shoot terrorists.
