How to Make a 45 Day Emergency Candle Out of Crisco

From what I hear/read, while it does work is not the most efficient use. That being said, a 45 day candle is nothing to sneeze at assuming that it does indeed last 45 days.

In early days California we used these allot, as California was growing we always had power outages was just a way of life
some times a day or so. We would fire these up and turn on the radio shows and was how we spent those nights without power.
I have several oil lamps for back outs hard to find good ones in resale shops anymore.

Has anyone purchase any of the lamps at lehmans?

The good thing about that is, that your not altering the crisco adding things that would make it unusable for food.
Animal fats are a very old means of light and heat but they are very sooty .

Kerosene-coal oil and diesel are similar, but not interchangeable. Diesel gells at a much higher temp and will only burn well with air supplied either with an air pump in a heater or with air and compression in an engine. It burns very dirty in a wick type burner and has a lot more odor and soot than kerosene. The best grades, usually labeled either parafin in most of the world or lamp oil in the US is the cleanest burning.
Best oil lamps now seem to be brought in from overseas and Lehmans is a good place if not always the cheapest. Used to like Deutz "sp?" But I have no idea about what they are like today as the last one I bought 20 years ago still works perfect .The Amish use lamps and the products that Lehmans carries for them are hard to beat. Some of their products see to be made for the "English" and aren't up to the Amish quality.
Don't know who makes Aladin now.

I have had Aladdin Lamps most of my life, and we still have three out in the Trading Post, as Backup Lighting if we lose both Gensets, at the same time, (Not Likely, and never happened, so far...) When we moved in here, in Alaska, Oil Lamps were what they had for Evening Lighting, but they were just straight Wick Lamps.... They bought a 55USG Drum of Pearl Kerosene every Fall, and that keep the Lamps going and the Blue Flame Heaters, supplied, that were the supplemental Heat in the Store. (Warm Storage for the winter) My first project was to install the Inverter/Battery System for all the Cabin Lighting, and switch from Incandescent Bulbs to CFL Lights. I brought a 2.6Kw 24Vdc Trace Inverter, with 800 AmpHours of Batteries for that job. I have UpGraded that System over the years and now have a 4Kw 24Vdc Trace with 1200AmpHours of Batteries for the Cabin, and moved the Old Trace and Batteries over to run the Winter Shop/Network Servers... Nothing like having A Nice Aladdin Lamp in the evening....

Yup, Aladdin, Rochester, Rayo, Manhattan...all were well made lamps. Got rid of the elcheapo wally world pos lamps and have not regretted it for a second. Newest one is about 50 years old, oldest is about 140 years...and still work fine.
FYI, Miles Stair's Wick Shoppe has an excellent selection of parts & supplies for lamps (and heaters), and provides good customer service. (Not affiliated with him, but have dealt with him)

I have two el cheapo oil lamps, yard sale rescues. One is fueled with expensive lamp oil, the other with kerosene. Light and heat output are essentially identical (same width wicks) the kero fueled one smells a bit.

Last buy for me was chimneys from Aladdin , they sent me made in China & i refused the CC bill & said BS , these are junk & thin , USA made ones or It's all coming back , Mantels / wicks etc. In eyesight right now I have four & a parts selection after they sent me all made in USA / Canada parts.
& @Ganado , you could be right , but i use to light my lamp at early AM , set it in low idle mode & recheck it just before leaving for the day , get home anywheres 6pm-11pm in total darkness but my lamp in the window I knew my cabin was there & semi warm .
Those days 60-70s flashlights were expensive & not trusted for light or time

+ ? er....however many! The Aladdin's can't be beat! Sucks that I only have four of them!
I also have a lamp made in Japan years ago. It's small (tiny) but very tough and handy. We also have two working railroad lanterns, those are great! We also congregate all the Carbon Monoxide detectors where the lamps are and have ventilation.
We've also had an 8,000BTU Kerosine heater for the last 45 years, one of the first items we bought for emergencies, the year we got married!

Our son made wall mounts for the kerosene lamps for the house, and we took shiny aluminum pie plates and fashioned them behind the chimney and it cast the light better into the room.

I remember using those when I was a kid, one of the houses we lived in, that was the only light available (& no, im not that old...)

Since your on a battery system re-wire the house for 12 volt and get LED lighting and use a fraction of the energy .
You can get ac powered LEDs but why waste the inverter for that .
I took dead incandescent and re-purposed them so I could use them in the same fixtures . wired the fixtures for 12 volt of course. These LEDs are polarized so you need toe discover which is positive nd negative wiring the lamp to match the bulb.

I use 6 volt deep cycle batteries in my bank, so there are some LED lights that are meant to be 4AAA batteries, and I've wired 6 volts as well through out the house to operate these as well. ( motion sensor lights from harbor freight ) The wire does not have to be very heavy to carry several LED lights because they use so little energy .
The motion sensor lights make it nice not having to find a light switch while walking through the house and they turn off on their own after a minuet of no motion.
    Talk about power savings.

I bought one of those adapters to go from a large tank to the fitting on the heater (works for Colman stoves and stuff too) but it's never been out of the package. I tend to just use up those little green tanks for some reason...

We have a Pair of12Vdc Busses in the Cabin, already... One that runs off of an 8D Battery, charged by a Constant Volt Ratelco Battery Charger, that sits on the Generator ONLY AC Buss, and have Lights on the HeadBoard of the Beds... I also have a 12Vdc Buss in my Office/RadioRoom that is Powered off of a Pair of L16HD Batteries and a 30Amp Regulated PowerSupply, that is tied to the Generator ONLY AC Buss.
