3M-TA3 Taking The Primal Plunge

I have dietary issues so a paleo or primal diet doesn't work for me - think stomach cramps all day the next 2 days if I stray too far from 'safe' foods.

Tried me on a few meds and on one I ate Constantly as if I just couldn't eat enough (I've never felt that kind of hunger in my life and hope to never again!). So I gained 100 lbs pretty fast, like 6 months.

Got off the meds in time to tear the cartilage in my knee and had to have surgery. The Phys Therapy afterwards was brutal on me - as you said I was a broken down car.

Been 3 years and had been slowly dropping weight till I was down 65 lbs. Then financial stressors happened and I was anxiety eating and gained 35 back.

Now I've torn my knee in two places and am going to only be able to do upper body excersises until after another surgery and a long trip back thru PT and get to try again.

I guess I just wanted to say your not alone and to go at the pace that is comfortable for you and slowly increase activity.

    Best of Luck!

Same question if you don't mind? Low carb makes all my dietary issues like heartburn, diarrhea, etc. go away. They just aren't good for me the way my body was designed, but oh so tasty and cheap.

I have an extreme case of IBS. Started slowly about 8 years ago and peaked about 5 years ago with me in the ER and them thinking I had a blockage in my intestines.

I've had 1 endoscopys and 2 colonoscopys with little results.

My good friends wife has a bad case of chrones and our lifestyle/symptoms are almost identical.

IBS is defined as having multiple symptoms of multiple GI tract issues so there isn't anything they can say "this is your problem".

Im on my 5th 'best GI Doc in my area' to little avail. I have recently found Donnatal can help with the cramps but has backlash symptoms.

I also have been given a huge dose of antibiotics that I can take for 2 weeks twice a year and all symptoms go away but only for the time I am taking them.

My stressors can add to my pain but are not the cause.

I have been to naturopaths when I had the money and they found I have a fat absorption issue.

So I can eat lean tender meat (hardly any fat at all), white type breads (no multigrain or whole wheat), sugars, no high cellulose foods like celery (even cooked to death). Apricots are ok but nectarines and peaches have too much cellulose. Also my spice options are salt garlic and onion powder - everything else is a crap shoot.

I grew up on BBQ and Mexican and never had gut issue till my 30's (after a massively high pressure and long hours job for a decade - which is why they thought it was caused by stress to begin with.

Now I eat white rice, no yolk pasta, pretty much anything bland and easy to digest.

Game meat is much easier to digest but my efforts to learn to hunt big game have been slow and have not produced any meat yet and I'm unfortunately in no shape to buy tags and hunt this fall.

I have gone gluten free for months, as well as many other options 'people that have gone thru this that helped them' cures. All kinds of probiotics, supplements and alternative diets.

Oh and no citrus - I'm sure I've forgotten something in here.

Potatoes, carrots cooked are ok but I grew up eating fresh fruits and veggies and love wholesome foods but I can't eat 99% of that stuff anymore.

I'm always up for suggestions and am going into another exploratory surgery at the end of the month to look for 'micro cholitus' and my doc told me there is less then a 2% chance I have that but I've had well over a million dollars in MRIs, CAT scans, ultrasounds, blood work and trial drugs while trying to fix this.

Long post so feel free to move it mods if it's too off topic.

And feel free to ask any questions.

What on the Paloe diet effects you?

This lifestyle is what is healing people with IBS.

Have you had food sensitivities testing done?

Allergic to eggs and 'sensitive' to a handful of things.

    Vegetables are my main issue.

My callories are about half lean protein and half carbs.

Its not covered by most insurances but well worth getting it done if you have issues.

Here is a blog post about someone doing this

I have looked into it but it's well beyond our financial means. With me not working for 6 years and my wife just starting a carrier getting paid less then I was at 18 plus a daughter at home going to college to be a Nerologist that we are doing everything we can to keep her focused on school, my guns and tools are just about gone after draining my severance pay, savings, 401k and selling my motorcycle and truck trying to keep things afloat.

Selling our house and relocating to a smaller one is not an option nor are the many other options available to someone with good credit and a job.

I'm currently looking for work I can do but jobs aren't as plentiful and my marketable skills that I can perform regularly are limited...

It's on the long term plan for sure.

Keep on it, brother. We are on the LCHF, low carb & high Fat.... I've lost 32 lbs. since March 1st (we went off plan a few days in June due to weddings and birthday celebrations). The wife is down 24 and has a tougher time cutting out sugar than me. I gave blood yesterday and my BP was 116 over 80. Haven't seen that in decades. Just a few years shy of retirement so I am no youngster. I am looking to shed another 35 and I'll be at my goal. I still should get more exercise but am taking that a bit slow until I drop more weight. I use to be able to drop 10 lbs in about 16 days by running and calisthenics but that was 20 years ago.The pounding my body took in sports and then in military training at Pensacola, etc. is manifesting itself as I age.
I am fortunate my wife is an incredible and curious cook and always looking for the healthiest approach for us, plus we raise a lot on our own garden so we know it's organic fresh and healthy.

I think this is important. Set your pace but always continue to move towards the goal. Both in eating and exercise, too much too soon is sometimes the reason changes in lifestyles do not last. You are changing your lifestyle, moving towards healthy.

@3M-TA3 congratulations on the step you are taking.

Here is the "before" picture taken this morning:

My weight was lower than expected at 311.1 lbs, especially since up to two day ago I was specifically picking on carbs to get them out of the house and away from my wife.

No, just the standard book. I'm keeping my carbs very low for the next half week to burn them out and get my body transitioning to fat burning as quickly as possible - similar to the Induction phase of Atkins. A few weeks ago I ran across the book going through boxes in my garage from a long ago previous move, and had forgotten I even owned it until then. Good thing, because I was just getting ready to buy a copy. I've been leafing through and reading it since then in preparation.

I can tell you that low carb eating is going to be so much better this time around. It's incredible the number of recipes out there and that will sure help to keep the blahs away.

I plan on updating my progress at about one month intervals, but after week 1 I have to say that I feel better than I have in quite a while. I've gotten comments that I'm more energetic, and indeed I'm getting more done both at home and at work. It just feels like my "motor" is running better and I can even think and concentrate better. It doesn't feel like a placebo type effect, but we will see if it continues as weeks become months.
