@Ganado - you would like my book "The Fisher People"
    Has stuff like this
    ************************************
The old man was sitting on the side of the road, using a spindly chair that had seen better days. In one hand was a pole, hosting a white rag. The rag fluttered weakly in the breeze. Since the column had been shot at so many times, there was more than a heated argument on the radio system. Many argued for shooting the old man outright and pressing on. Others, more conservative, pointed out the white flag. The arguments ended when a young cadet volunteered to go forward and talk to the local.

The squat armored vehicle stopped on the far side of the road, when the soldado stepped out, he left the hatch open, just in case the bullets started flying. "Ayer fue un buen dia."

"Si. Every day I live is a good day."

"So, old man. Why are you out on the road?"

"Is simple. To ask you and your compardres to go back to your homes. Go see your Momacita, tell her of your love. If you are to go on, you will die. I know this."

"We are here to free you, old man, to reclaim our stolen land..."

The man lifted his knarred hand. "Stop. Has anyone here asked this favor of you? No, they have not. I beg you. Go home, now. Live." Tears ran from his eyes. "The radio in Houston tells everyone your location. You cannot do anything but die."

At that, the younger man laughed. "Your Army has fled; our brothers in California have welcomed us with open arms, their oppressors defeated by..."

"No seas tonto!" The old man's voice was like a whip. "This isn't California, this is...Tejas! He thumped the pole for emphasis. "If what you say is true, go to California. Help those who you think need the help. You will not help here."

"Has the sun gotten to you old man?" He pointed to the road ahead. "That isn't even a town, just some hovels at a crossroads."

"You will build us new homes? A new school? Or just become another in a long line of politicos who will do nothing but make life harder than it should be? No, Senor, no thank you. They say the Lord will forgive fools. I can only pray for you." He turned and walked away from the road. When he got to the roadside ditch, he dropped the pole and struggled down into the shade provided by the ditch edge.

Back inside the armored car, the radio demanded, "Well? What did he want?"

"He asked us to turn around and go home. He said we would die."

After a string of obscenities, the other speaker added. "We have wasted enough time, go now. There is no threat here, it is impossi..."

He never finished his sentence, the penetrator from the 120mm main gun round was still at supersonic velocity when it punched through the entire length of the Panhard; going on to destroy the next vehicle in line. As they both burst into flame, the remainder of the column ran off the road in an effort to turn and flee. Three minutes later, it was all over. Every vehicle in the column was destroyed. The only sound was the roar of burning fuel and the occasional pop as the onboard ammo cooked off.

"Hey! Flattery! What the Hell was your grandpa trying to do out there?"

"Dunno, Sarge. He said he was tired of seeing people die for no reason. I guess he was trying to get them to leave."

"Yeah, well. That worked out real well. Grab the bike and go see if he needs any help. I'm still trying to raise someone on the Command net to see how long we need to stay here."

"Thanks, Sarge." The young Specialist climbed out of the driver's seat of the Abrams and pulled the bicycle down off the bustle. It took no time before he was standing next to his grandfather. "Come now, grandmother is worried about you. Here, give me your hand." When they were both back on the tarmac, Sean saw the streaks where the tears had washed his face.

"Why do you cry, Grandfather? You tried to warn them off."

"They had been lied to by their...I will not say leaders. Lied to, badly. They came to free us, he said. Reclaim stolen lands. I guess they forgot to tell him why here is not California."

    "Forgot what?"

"To tell them that many of our grandfathers fought at the Alamo. My own grandfather almost died to drive off Santa Ana, so that his children and their children could have a free land to raise their children. Nothing was stolen here." He looked at the young man, his eyes now burning, "We kicked them out."

Not political, just another reason the Brexit Vote went[IMG]
the way it did. Now, replace Brussels with "Washington DC"

When I was a kid in Texas it was Coke or Dr. Pepper, Ford or Chevy, Kennedy or Nixon. Choices were black and white and simple. Oh yeah, everyone was a democratic until they nominated a Catholic. Everyone in my family was afraid "In God we Trust" would be replaced with "In the Pope we Hope".
