to be fair, once your mind gets conditioned to handing out change that you count the cashier has to re gear for counting it manually. (I worked on a study for this for a client, you try making change all day and see if you can do it)

You can make up that they are stupid all you want too but the truth is they have to monitor alot more than your change. Most people who criticize cashiers not being able to make change can't even run the damn cash registers that these people run.

Its really easy to criticize one transaction when you are not use to doing hundreds of transactions a day.

I kindly disagree, at the ripe old age of 10 I ran a "Soda Pop" stand at a Roping Corral. Sold goods, food and drinks, and made change at one window where the riders came up on horse back, sold goods and made change at another window with all kinds of walk ups.
Never was short or over. Just a matter of completing one transaction at a time and after all you can have only one priority one, no matter the line or the folks at which window. More a matter of concentration and learning how to count change properly to the purchaser.

Many kids today cannot tell time on a grandfather clock, too embedded with the electronic and digital world where they expect the cash register to give them the answer.

The register actually tells them the change they are to be given. It's on your receipt

Back in the day, the printed receipt simply listed the item price and the total. You had to count out the change without electronic brains, and the register was operated by a lever. Before that, there wasn't even a register tape. (But most monkeys aren't old enough to remember that. The fact that I do is scary.)

I've done both ways and you boys missed the point. Once you have done several transaction and then you start to give the change and someone says let me give you xyz, you have to regear your brain and it takes a minute to think because your focus was on something else. If they were actually counting the change the other way 'soda pop' stand example. THen the brain is geared for that.

To assume someone is stupid because of technology is far more ignorant when you haven't actually used the technology yourself.

I am by no means arithmetically literate, but the error is in assuming that the debt owed to each parent is $49. The actual debt to each parent is $49.50

There is no missing (unaccounted for $1)

Edit: This assessment is incorrect....the debt owed to each parent is $50, The golden haired son only discharged $49 of the debt to each parent by repaying them $49 each , leaving an undischarged debt of $1 each. 2 * $49 + $2 = $100 all $FRNs accounted for

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! - But then you went to school before it was all about self esteem and dumbing down the standards to make sure everybody passed through to the next grade.

Off topic, but as a companion piece to the math question see if you can noodle this one out:

I believe you have assumed too much.
Have you any clue about the similarities between the basic 4 function mechanical calculator and the LSI digitial Calculator?
They both function in the same way the human brain does. They add and carry 1 to the next column in the same theory as the human brain does. They repeat add, which is what most people call multiplication and they do a function of repeat subtraction which is also called division.

Not to mention some on this list have been a part of this world from the start of mechanical to electronics that even includes electron tube driven mechanical systems, each step was learned with no excuses allowed and a need to know that allowed even greater inventions.

Think about all of that the next time you see some semi adult stumble along thinking they can Text and walk at the same time.

    Actually, that is not correct.

Each parent loaned $49 and is owed $49. The error is the one dollar the kid kept is not added to the parents' money but to the cost of the shirt. Each parent loaned $49 for a total of $98 loaned. The kid has a $97 shirt on his back plus $1 in his pocket for a total of $98 in assets. 98=98 and there is no missing dollar.
Dare I suggest the solution might be more obvious if counting back the change correctly? :)

I told you I ain't no rithmetical jeanius....not much of a spiller ether.

Edit: The confusion is caused by conflating two quite separate transactions, with separate entities as one continuous transaction.

    Transaction 1.

Loan transactions between Parents and son.

Parents each lone golden haired boy $50 each for a total of $100
Son repays $49 each for a total of $98
and has an unpaid debt of $2
Discharged debt of $98 + undischarged debt of $2 = $100. all $100 are accounted for.

Purchase / Sales transaction between golden haired son and clothier.

    Son has $100
    purchases a $97 shirt
    is given $3 change
    parents have a %100 equity in a $97 shirt plus $3 in liquid assets. $97 +$3 = $100

By repaying the parents $49 each, the son has increased his equity in the purchased shirt to $98 and reduced his debt burden by $98, leaving an undischarged debt of $2.
    $98 + $2 = $100. all $100 are accounted for.

The problem is not actually a simple arithmetic problem...it is a double entry book keeping problem. So sayeth chello...and probably only chello lol.

I was appalling at arithmetic as a schoolboy, and I can't say that it is any strength still. What I have developed is a skill in logic...and that developed well after I left school.
