I took it as an exercise in humility. No matter how well prepared; there are events that take out the human race.
I see a domino effect starting with some cataclysm which triggers mass suicides, mass insanity, and massive civil unrest. It could be the eruption of a Super Volcano, Asteroid Impact, Global Epidemic, Massive Solar Flares or any combination of the above. The aftermath would be people struggling to survive by any means imaginable. The perfect premise for a short SHTF story or series of stories......

I think it is interesting that 4 of the top five are from space. These are things we truly cannot control or predict. We have had some big asteroids in the last few years that there was no warning of (Russia & North Atlantic 2 weeks ago?). Sometimes I think something is coming and they just haven't said. People are addicted to themselves and their electronic devices. Addiction causes depression. But wouldn't it be if there was mass insanity, then insanity would be the normal and the normal (sane) would be the ones they would start heavily medicating?
I recon there will be a mass Zombie outbreak when the internet goes down & 90% of people cant function without twitter & facebook..... Instead of chanting "Brains...brains...." it will be more like "signal... signalll.. battery loooooow...."
I've voting with @VisuTrac on this one... nature (or biochemical warfare) will get us. And the US military is doing alot of posturing right now over the financial markets as the Asian Pacific Bank just launched its multi currency trading platform... so maybe nuclear in which case @BTPost wins. Either way none of your preps will make a difference for survival if you are too close to the center
Introduced epidemic that goes global and wasn't meant to, as in attack from a foreign enemy with no conscience or insight into what they are introducing into the biosphere. I like it!! Who is going to write that one?
But... I have alcohol!! So at least I'll be happy when I die of severe bacterial infection. Quite possible the high alcohol content in my system would render me immune!! Oooo, never mind...
