Bahco Laplander Saw

Aloha Monkeys,

My good buddy @Hanzo gifted me this and finally had a chance to bust it open and give it a try....

Yeah... I was going to just pull out the Sawzall with the wood blade but figured if the going got tough I would do that...

I was pleasantly surprised when it performed flawlessly and better yet... really fast....

This was a dead portion of my white guava tree....

Zipped through the thick branches with about 6-7 pulls.... not a lot of pressure... wanted to see and let the saw do it's work.... would have probably been less with pressure... but I subscribe to the "let the tool do its work" methods... less chance to ruin the tool and of injury from too much pressure....

Push button to lock it closed and open... worked fine... no play and solid... different from some of my other saws that have a wire came lock and don't have a locked closed feature... nice....

Great addition to the kit and yard tools...

Was surprised to find out Bahco is a Snapon company...

I don't carry saws with me into the bush, unless I am purposefully going to to buck a tree in several places. Axes are just beter, IMO.
Picked one of these up last year, and I keep finding the bugger in my Kit when I hit the trail. VERY good saw, and that is a recommendation from a saw hater.

 

For whatever reason, a small saw is not something that has made it's way to my pack. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the review.

 

Carry one in my BOB. The best for the price out there. Also carry an axe in the jeep.

 

I carry a gerber folding saw with a second on my tractor... both have seen a lot of use and in some situations I prefer them to an axe...

 

Yup @Witch Doctor 01 .... especially for certain (actually quite a few) applications... I like the control with a good saw... this branch was tangled up with the live parts of the tree and the bamboo... so it was not as simple as hack away... sort of like tree surgery... cut ... look ... cut ... look and it was out of there without messing up anything.... perfect when you are trimming and the branches are not solid where an axe blow would hit and rebound... much safer.... I guess in my old age safety is an issue... between this, my other saws and my machete... it's all I really need... even when out and about... I don't have a need for big stuff and most branches or wood will be found or I only really take what I need... if I need to split it... well that's what the machete is for and even if I don't have that... a simple cut with the saw and an easily made wedge with a rock will usually split it just fine... (that is not to say that I don't appreciate the virtues of an axe in certain situations... the right tool for the right job)...

We have one, Really good bit of kit...

just watch out as it can make a nasty mess of your hand if it jumps & you had your other hand to close.. & then your hubby freaks out and wants you to go get stitches

Ahh grasshopper... You can split with a saw. Saw half was through and give it a good whack. Half will split off. Turn it and hold it by the split half and give it another whack. The other side will split. You end up with one long split piece and two split halves. Super fast and easy.

 

Good point... I always have gloves... if there is any chance of an accident... I wear gloves... hands are important tools too... you need to take care of them... and I'm too old for that macho hands like leather and steel ... I'll leave that to the younger Monkeys

I think part of preparedness is practicing... triage... pain... had a wonderful gash over my eye that wouldn't stop bleeding for about 20 minutes.... normally would have gone to the doctor... but I looked at it after the bleeding stopped and just took care of it... slight scar... tender for a while... but all is good now and you can't barely see the scar...

Sharp tools and unprotected hands can be a bad combination...keep the gloves handy. Glad all is OK.

Yeah, I have a bag habit of doing at least one draw cut across some part of my hand every time I get one of these out. Saws ain't my thing...

 

I've got an older model of this one that I've used since the late 80's. Taking up little to no room and no weight to speak of I think something like these need to be in everyone's bag.

I've been hit full force with the ax on several occasions, and come out with barely a scratch. I can barely cut through a 2x4 with a saw without gauze. Haha. Mostly been lucky with the axes, but I know how to use them, and more or less learned what not to do the hard way. Still got all the digits.

Something to be said for knowing when it it is simply not possible to cut something with an ax without hurting yourself, and having the self control to walk away when you still want to hit it harder than a knockout punch in MMA.

P.S. I feel that I should clarify that first paragraph. Outside the obvious bushcraft mishaps, I used to do a lot of sparring with live steel. Most of the times I have been hit by things was during that period, and my handle (no pun intended) comes from that period in my life. Hard to beat a coupl of good axes in a "sword" fight.

 

I have two axes, both of the double bit variety. I've had a couple of nicks and close calls...mostly choking up on the axe to do the finer chores because I was too lazy to go get the hatchet.

Axes and fighting....that reminds me. I made an axe last year for Halloween. I'll go get a pic shortly. I'm sure you can appreciate it. False edge right now...didn't want anyone getting hurt!

I thought it was good for about 45 min worth of work....316 stainless.

As soon as I can get a break from work, I'll get the forge finished and really start having some fun!

 

Just be careful. I'm not a fan of double bit axes for fighting. I always seen to take too much friendly fire when I do so. Haha. I;m surprised I don't have a channel across my right bicep and elbow region from how many times I've drug a rear blade or spike across it at high speed. I usually stick with a rounded or polled ax. I honestly prefer the hammer on the rear, and I can do my moves much tighter than with a double bit. You hit something with that monster, I want pics. Ha.

 

...hammer on the rear...I want one. As soon as I edge it, I'll post the carnage!

Haven't really had any experience with other type . These were handed down to me many, many years ago. They're all I've used.
