    The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. ?
    Yes, this is true. I own a business. I have two employees. All three of us do the same work, except that in addition to making the products, I also run the office ( which is a full time job in itself ), and deliver the products. Some day I hope to make as much money as they do. It hasn't happened yet in 4 years of business.. I am blessed, unequally.

    The inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of the miseries. ?
    Yesterday, I got to work at 5:45am.. I left last night just before midnight. It is just after 7:00am now. I have been at work for over an hour. I suspect I am more miserable than the guy who will wake up in a few hours and enjoy another day of holding his couch from flying away. - But by all means, tax me more. After all that guys beer isn't going to buy itself. And he certainly isn't going to look for a job to buy it with his own money... But hey, he votes and that's all that counts.

    Poor old Winston need not be taken quite so literally. This quote is drawn from a parliamentary speech delivered by him, in the context of the immediate post WWII British demobilisation of its armed forces (1) , and the looming potential for conflicts between capital and labour that would interfere with the transition from a war economy (with many restrictions on both capital and labour), to a peacetime economy where there would be fewer regulatory restrictions. The scale of demobilisation of service and civilian personnel committed to the war effort was massive. In many instances men and women were still occupying liberated territories all over the globe and the simultaneous release of service personnel would distort the labour market to the detriment of the nation as a whole. He was appealing to both capital and labour to put aside their traditional industrial warfare inclinations for the sake of getting Britain's economy back on track...which would be benefit all Britons.

    The quote, in context is as follows.

    Emphasis (embolding and underlining) mine.

    Winston Churchill's appeal was neither to the socialism of Karl Marx, nor the capitalism of Adam Smith, but to a more utilitarian (2) viewpoint when dealing with the economic challenges of demobilisation. The quote was a rhetorical device to underscore the harm to both capital and labour should the kind of industrial warfare that they indulged in prior to, and largely put aside during, the war years against the common enemy, be allowed to return and hobble the British economy.

    I think that Winston Churchill was well acquainted with the fact that the miseries of socialism were not actually equally shared; that the soviet power elites at all levels enjoyed preferential treatment over other "citizens", and that he was aware that not all industrialists were rapacious exploiters of the working class.

    There there, CS. It's not about the superiority of one system of measurement over another...it's about the superiority of one nation over the rest of the world! Allow the gorilla some patriotic chest thumping for goodness sake! ;)

    I would also point out that Australia was using imperial measurements when it aided the NASA comms which helped make the moon landing possible: that does not mean that imperial measurements are inherently better than metric systems of measurement. I would have to say that when Australia converted to metrication, it was a godsend to me as an infantry officer/mortar platoon commander when calculating angular distances in mils, rather than doing calculations in degrees and minutes.

    I understand, and accept what you say CS. However, memes don't have to be factual, accurate, or even make any real logical sense...the art of the meme is identifying the substance of the memetic message, gleaned from the images and text used in the meme. This meme is about the superiority of 'merica!, not the superiority of feet and inches over metres and centimetres or whatever units of measurement were in general use by non-astronaut Americans at the time: nor even whether feet and inches were actually used by NASA at the time suggested in the meme.

    It's rather a silly meme, as most memes are....but not to be taken seriously or literally.

    @Ganado
    Edit: Demonstrating how silly the meme is, One could easily flip the image and text 180 degrees and come to quite a different, and equally irrelevant conclusion.....

    There are two kinds of Countries

    [IMG]
    Those with the first astronaut to orbit the earth, and those which use US Customary Units of Measurement (miles, yards, feet and inches).
