Ignoring political correctness as a most universally detestable label, I have come to hate "sustainable" as one of the most mis- and over-used word with little meaning remaining. What's yours?
words are a tool just like a hammer and a nail. Why hate the words? its the implied meaning behind them where people use them irresponsibly. e.g. sustainable able to be maintained at a certain rate or level. e.g. tiny house, permaculture etc what the new school has done is taken old farming techniques and created a new vocabulary that allows them to think they have invented something different. When in fact they have pulled together a bunch or already invented techniques and use them synergistically. Language allows you to stake your claim, claim your turf, and make something old seem new. The key to controlling human behavior. Look at the media and what they do with black vs white, cop vs civil, liberal vs conservative. they have taken words and turned them into 'us vs them' so that we pick a side. The only one who wins is the media as they sell more ads. language is a tool and words are the nails, and glue for how we create civilization
I do NOT "Hate" words.... I do "Hate" Definitions that some people, put on Words.... I do NOT "Hate" people..... I Do "Hate" some things, that Humans do.... But that is just "Me"..... and I only speak, for Myself.....
I love words and can't think of any that I hate but its their usage turns me from the mild mannered lady reporter clad in hat, gloves, stockings and heels into a Doberman with an attitude. I detest trendiness in vocabulary. Often led by the media and the gov spokesmen, certain words creep into our lives like primordial ooze. Think a few years back and remember the ever present "gravitas," "paradigm shift," "synergy," "Mission critical. If i hear the same word or phrase used more the 3 times in the course of a week, it begins to become just a buzz word to be used by those who are unable to express any unique thought
{chortle} The bees are out, as intended -- Add "system" to the list, entirely too often misused. Saw it applied to clothing the other day.
How about this one - Reverse Fulfillment. Why not just say "return," the person would actually sound a lot more intelligent.
"Common sense measure/ legislation " Is nothing more than someone trying to have the high ground, while they dish other folks dirt.
I heard a phrase the other day on NPR that made me LOL - forward progress; as opposed to what, backward progress?
