The weekend I Took Amy My wife and Shelby my Daughter Doe hunting back in our home area. Sat Morning we had three in front of us at daylight, but they were running and the Girls choose not to shoot. So we made our way up the hills and across the flats and spotted some deer. I led them through the field up a wash into shooting position. Amy told Shelby to shoot one first and she would pick a seconded one after the shot. So I got Shelby up on the Dike and ready to shoot, (her first hunt, 270 win, 13yr old.) It took her a couple of minutes to get her self together, and take the shot. She was really nervous and I told not too worry and to shoot just like we practiced at the range, off handed at the life size deer poster. So she came to the moment of truth and started her breathing and squeezing and the 270. IT BARKED! and the Doe went down right where it was standing. The other deer started running and I pulled my little trick to stop them, which my wife has witnessed many time’s , and later told me she knew when I did it to be ready to shoot ! Which is exactly what happened. They stopped and Amy whacked it with her 25-06 and it went down in the exact spot where it stood before the shot. The two deer lay 10’ apart! As I turned after Amy shooting her doe, I looked over at Shelby and as soon as I did she started to cry I think emotions over took her from the excitement and I hugged her and reassured her he did great! She Pulled a shot off better than most of my hunting friends could. After a few mins we broke out the knives and I taught her to clean a deer, she did perfect, chip off of the ole block! She didn’t seem to mind the gutting at all! They both made me very proud with their hunting skills and shooting skills and also equally important the after the kill job! So now I have been informed we are going Elk hunting!
Nice trip. Congrats to Shelby on her first. I understand your wife is an old pro at this business but good work on her part as well. I take it your 'trick' will not be discussed here? Thanks for sharing
Good job all around. (I've seen a similar trick work. ) Don't forget a bit of jerky to go with the roasts.
I am looking forward to hunting with my kids as they grow up. You have to be happy. My 13 yro nephew will be going up for his first deer hunt this fall and I have him set up with a 50-100 yard shot from a blind. He is excited.
Looks good to me. One day I'll bag me one. Been deer hunting, jest never brought one down. There is always the future.
There's nothing more beautiful than a fine woman standing over a fresh kill! You must be very proud of your daughter, and I'm so glad to see that some kids are still being raised this way. She's 13 eh? 'bout the same age as my nephew who hasn't killed yet, but he does thouroughly enjoy guns. I hope I can help him get a deer next year (I live too far away now).
