Getting Organized

I am the worst at getting organized. I have my preps spread out all over the house bug out gear is three different places, defensive weapons in two. It is a mess in my garage, and you don't even want to go there. at least I can get the truck out of the garage....

So I have a plan to get organized.

The worst threat in my local is a Tsunami. Although the largest recorded wave was around 30 feet, the new predictions say 100. That puts me 25 feet under water and sucked out to sea as the waters retreat. My only chance is to bug out, quickly.

I made a test run on my evacuation route and I was still at 57 above MSL after 20 minutes of driving with zero traffic. But, I will gain some time on the rising waters because of a natural land barrier and the valley I'm traveling is 90 degrees from the main river that will take the brunt of the energy. This is in a direction that I believe few will take. Summer would be the worst as the area is full of tourists and vacationers who would not know where they are going and would have their 5th wheels, trailers and RV's plugging up the highways, so I'm headed in a different direction.

First, I need to get organized, bug out gear all centrally located such that the truck can be loaded in 5 minutes or less. Everyone is assigned a specific job so that duplication of effort is avoided.

Second, defensive gear also centrally located but pared down to essentials. That will be the hard part. I can see value in having all of my equipment available for food gathering in the wild.

Third, survival food stores packaged and ready to just grab and go.

Fourth, refine my bug out gear. How many changes of clothes, what types of foot wear, which shelter, fire starting, water containers, water purification, food storage, and accessories that may not be essential but would make life more primitive less painful.

Anyway, I need to quit putting it off and get it done. I need to make a list of the things I have....

Consider: Having it all in one place might make it easy to grab and go, but what happens if, for example, it's all in the garage and catches fire?

Perhaps a bugout trailer, fully loaded, and ready at a moments notice to hook and roll.

Du erunner good for you. Organizing isn't my favorite thing cuz it takes time and thinking. So good for you for starting it. You have to start some where.

I say worry about the fictional 'garage burning' later.

Point is, two can become one, one can become none. Be guided by your wallet and circumstance.

Any self storage places between you and the BOL ? Might want to cache some gear and supplies you can reacquire on the fly. Could make a good rally point if you and yours get separated enroute.

I wouldn't worry about somebody looting any self storage lockers when the Wall-Marts and Krogers are ripe for the pickin'.

Oh, I wouldn't say that. Some of my very best hand made armor is floating around campus bars, from what I hear.
Theives used a sledgehammer, to beat down the connecting walls of an entire bank of storage units, and mine was among them. The took everything of value they could find.

That was my 1st thought as well. AND @ghrit has a valid point.
My hat's off to @Dunerunner for having the balls to post this honest appraisal of a hole in his preps and what he plans to do to correct it. A lot of folks would just stay behind the keyboards and never mention it. I know, because I've met folks that have done so.

If ya want my [2c], after the organizing is done I would look at putting the BO stuff in a trailer-there is a reason the military has those prepositioning ships... I am also a big fan of prepositioned caches whenever possible. A really good BO trailer can be built either from scratch, or by converting a box type by adding ammo cans along the fenders and alum tool boxes connected to the rails or bed of the trailer. I've done several in the past for just this purpose. Many times a person can find the stuff needed for next to nothing by hounding craigslist. Again, great post Dunerunner!

I'm not sure as I don't have my scientific calculator handy... but distance + altitude might be enough to miss the wave... based on the displacement of the water... get some one to model it and determine the distance needed...

We are almost done organizing the garage and my camping stuff. I carry a large Rubbermaid tub with a locking lid. I added a rubber gasket to the top edge to keep moisture out. This tub has been setup in my truck for years with road gear hydraulic jacks, 1" towline, tiedown straps, jumper cables, etc. Thinking that idea worked well, I sorted my other stuff and packed another 6 tubs the same way. Food, ammo, stuff in the tubs, ten 4 - 6 gallon water jugs and in a few minutes the back of the truck is loaded. Any valuables (don't have any), weapons, papers etc. in the back seat. This may not suit others but it works for me. I use a ramp to slide the tubs up into the truck bed as my spine is shot. If in the odd chance the .mil ordered us out I'll hook up my 18' trailer with the balance of long term foods, tools, etc. Tractor and other things will have to left behind or picked up for a second/third trip? Thanks to my dear wife she has after all these years finally getting me better organized......

I have over twenty tubs like this for quick movement.......everything from food to ammo.... it works for me. :)
Everything else is either mixed though the pantry or elsewhere. :)

And this is one of the methods I plan to utilize for organizing the get out quick stuff! Thanks for the reminder @Yard Dart [winkthumb]

I think you should get a disposal bin rental from Gorilla Bins in Toronto to remove all the unwanted things in your house. Only after that start organizing. This will save you a lot of time and you will also have enough and more space to arrange the things.

I like this method and I put some together after you shared this idea but the only issue I see with assortment tubs is that it is hard to monitor expiration dates. Stock rotation seems like a never ending chore. Do you put on a made date or mark with an expiration date?

Pre-loaded bins are the way to go. As far as rotation, if you label your bins say 1,2,3, etc (for items such as food), then when you need to rotate, empty bin1 into your normal pantry and refill it, "x" amount of time later, bin 2 is emptied into the panty then refilled.

I'm working on something similar since I just got a small trailer (4x6) for use with my 4-wheeler.
