Bait?

OK, I've captured the image of the critter that been killing about 1 Chukar per night, not sure how it's getting into the cage yet. I normally use Hav-a-hart traps but this guy either steals the dead chukar, or if I tie it in it ignores the bait.

What do you experienced trappers use?

Are you sure you want to catch a live skunk? Killing it would definitely be preferable, Very Quickly! Either way you have to deal with the stench, but a quick kill from a very good distance would be preferable!
My dog got skunked and came running in the house and rubbed her face all over the couch before we had a chance to stop her, needless to say we got a new couch and it was weeks before the smell went away.

 

tuna... drip some of the oil as a lead to the trap... probably from a location they frequent... you might add a few morsels to keep tempting them...

or if all else fails Bacon... and bacon grease...

 

I understand the spray problem but I just can't kill such a cute creature of god, that is probably rabid and I've seen them chase my dogs thru the grass running backwards spraying them as they go. Just Kidding, I normally dispatch with a .22 LR. I just wish I knew how they were getting in, it's chain link with chicken wire hog tied to the inside. Put the game cam up in another location. Tuna or cat food was what I was thinking.

 

Use a live trap.

Check the trap early in the morning.

If you have a skunk then wait till it curls up and goes to sleep.

Pop it in the head with a .22.

If dead then roll it out of the trap quickly onto a feed sack.

You will note a greenish oily goo coming from the scent gland.

It will stink but it will of course not be a spray just a release of the sphincter muscle.

The skunk's head is so small that it can pass right through poultry wire or chain link fencing.

If you have free range small dogs or cats I have no answer. If you are free of those .... a victor conibear 110 or duke equal can be used with bait to kill it. It still will probably spray as a final act. I can provide further info by PM on how to make the set. Sardines in oil or salmon, or tuna, or canned cat food will work for lure.

 

Key word being OIL. Get the tuna packed in oil, not water.

I'd be careful using bacon. You might come out in the morning to find a certain high heeled member of this group caught in the trap..

 

Nuke it from orbit...it's the only way to be sure!

Yes unfortunately, 2 barn cats nearby, 3 dogs, 2 house cats that probably don't get down there, so no leg traps are allowed. I go shopping tomorrow so Sardines are on the list.

I build a long wooden box with plywood and 2 by scraps, place bait in the center and traps inside of each end. The VC 110 is a 4.5" by 4.5" coil spring crusher trap. I have a modified design for a box that would be relatively safe for the dogs, but I just don't know about a hungry cat. It would be ideal for the skunk killer.

 

Well, if a skunk can walk straight thru poultry wire, just close the ends of the long wooden trap box with poultry wire to keep the dogs, cats, & kids out. Plus, Mr. Skunk will probably think you're trying to keep him out, too and be twice as eager to get in.

 

Nice thought, but cats can do the same trick. Anywhere his head can pass, so will the rest if him.

Might as well put the sardines in a peanut butter and jelly sammich for added....OH HAI!

 

Use a live trap but don't pop him where you don't want the odor for a couple weeks or more!

When you have him in a live trap, just hide yourself with a poncho, sheet, towel, blanket so he can't see you and gently walk up to the trap and slowly drape it over completely covering the trap. He won't spray if he can't see you. Remove the trap to a safe area, lift the cover a bit at one end enough to prop open the door. Move back and when Pepe le pu has vacated the area, retrieve the trap and towel. I've done it and my nephew has done this dozens of times. I just used dog food for bait. Not sure what my nephew uses.
