@Motomom34 if you have never shot an AR15 I would highly suggest you try it. It is an extremely versatile platform, lightweight for everyone (man or woman), ammo readily available and reasonable in price and durable with proper maintenance.... as well as many parts will be available on the battlefield if we get to that level.

And when we are discussing magazines being banned over 10 rounds..... all I can say is buy as many now that you can.... and rat them away for future needs..... because they are the only way to "fly".... and combat MZB's ;)

  3. If you need a 8-12 pound spike maul to drive a railroad spike and all you have is a tack hammer.. is that the "ideal" hammer for the job? What you have right now is not always the proper or ideal tool for the job. The same goes for firearms.. you may have to make due with what you have out of pure necessity but that sort of defeats the whole concept of planning.

I'd say an AR is the best choice if you can only have one. I'd add a .22lr conversion bolt for more flexibility.

The only reason I own an AR is our military and police use them. That creates the availability of parts and ammo. The better all around and more reliable rifle is the AK. The cartridge is large enough for large game animals with a well placed shot and can still shoot small game without totally destroying it. It has been proven to work well on people and is made for poor maintenance and abuse.

As another choice, AR with a 300 Blackout upper and a 5.56 upper and a 22 conversion. Choices boy do they come in bunches!

This whole thread is a "Trick question".... There is No ONE Correct &Real Answer... Any single Weapon choice, will be a compromise, in many of the multitude of criteria, one could chose to use to characterize such a weapon.... There will ALWAYS be a Better weapon, in any single Criteria, and then that weapon would be a severely compromised, in some other Criteria, used to characterize a choice..... AND the Answer will be more about ones Personal Opinions, than any subjective Criteria..... definitely a "Blonde" Question.....

Here I am just setting on the bench and swinging my feet.

Verbalizing what gear is best is just part of hunters lore and the ability to pass it on from generation to generation , just another tradition and nothing to get upset about.

A gun that shoots that stuff from the first Star Trek reboot movie and consumes matter. Powered by a matter to anti-matter conversion unit with a Perpetu-cell (tm) "L" battery. Using the patented Nevah-Evah-Miss target acquisition system... tied into an orbital nuke platform for when it absolutely, positively, has to be blow'd up RIGHT NOW!

We here are a house divided. While I am a fan of all things AR, the Nurse is a AK fan. While I have gotten her to shoot and admit that the AR family is better at longer distances, she remains a fan of the peasant rifle.. So, we have both. Being from the west and used to shooting at distances that I can only fondly reminisce about nowadays, I actually see and understand why the AK is so popular down here. Most open shots seem to be from 75-150 maybe 200 yards. I did build a 7.62 x 39 upper for one AR, and it does pretty well. I will always prefer the AR platform over the AK, but as has been stated earlier, that is a personal choice.

I thought about it more. If you are talking about defending your position from roving bands of bad guys, your are going to want an AR. Especially if you are outnumbered. It is very accurate, mine anyway, has decent range, and a high rate of fire and high capacity. It is deadly with the correct ammo. It is proven superior to anything else in combat for fifty years with good reason. Also it can do service as a all around hunting rifle if you are a good hunter. One of it's key advantages is that you can engage multiple targets quicker than any other weapon short of my favorite, the M60. Any gun is useful. Some may prefer something else and that is good.

I agree that an AK is a good choice , but what if the supply of good cheap ammo gets banned from import ? I suggest an AK chambered in 308 like the saiga , vepr or yugo m77 .

Firm Set to Manufacture Russian AK-47 Kalashnikov Rifles in US

LAS VEGAS -- A Pennsylvania firm plans to begin manufacturing the AK-47 Kalashnikov in the U.S. this spring to skirt sanctions that ban imports of the iconic Russian rifle, an official said.

RWC Group LLC, based in Tullytown, Pennsylvania, the official U.S. importer of Kalashnikov, displayed a "Kalashnikov USA" booth at this year's SHOT Show, the nation's largest gun show, which draws some 60,000 attendees to a sprawling conference center here. The exhibit featured the slogans, "Russian heritage" and "Made in USA."

"We have been non-stop here since we opened Tuesday morning," said Jim Kelly, production manager at RWC's Kalashnikov USA, referring to foot traffic at the exhibit. "The people seem to be pleased that it is going to be a U.S.-made product."

"I don't think the interest in the AK will ever go away -- it's such a universal weapon," he added. "Regardless of sanctions, it's going [everywhere]. And that is one thing that basically prompted us to make it here."

Because of economic sanctions imposed on Russia last summer following the country's military involvement in the Ukraine, RWC is prevented from importing more Kalashnikovs. So the firm will build the AK-style weapons and other firearms here instead, according to CEO Thomas McCrossin. Legally, it can do so -- provided there is no communication with the Russian company, Kalashnikov Concern, he said.

"In the second quarter of this year, we are going to start manufacturing here in the U.S.," McCrossin told CNN. "What I'm manufacturing are our own AK-47s and shotguns under the Kalashnikov brand."

The guns on display at the event bore the inscription "Tullytown, Pennsylvania," on the barrel. McCrossin, who wasn't immediately available for an interview, said the company is scouting locations for a new manufacturing plant.

The AK-47 is one of the most popular rifles in the world. Known as Kalashnikov after its Soviet designer, it dates to World War II and is known for being reliable and easy to maintain. Those same characteristics have also made it one of the most copied designs, with knockoffs available in the U.S. and other countries around the globe.

Stateside demand for Kalashnikovs reportedly surged over the past year after a U.S.-led coalition targeted Russian officials and companies for economic sanctions in response to Russia's invasion and subsequent annexation of the Ukraine's Crimea region. The trend was compounded by the fact that both the firearms and the ammunition they shoot are relatively cheap.

Gun-makers in the U.S. and abroad have responded to the changes in the market with an assortment of rifles that include AK-style features.

Israel Weapon Industries, known as IWI, plans to release an updated version of its Galil rifle, which accepts any standard AK-47 magazine to shoot 7.62mm X 39mm ammunition, in the U.S. this spring.

CMMG Inc., the Fayette, Missouri-based arms maker, has blended features of the U.S. AR-15-style rifle and the Russian AK-47-style rifle in a new product called the Mk-47 "Mutant." The rifle was spawned "from two of the world's greatest platforms," and engineered for AR-15 accuracy and AK-47 reliability, according to promotional materials.

AP-Rhino, a gun-maker in St. Louis, introduced the MM-47, another AR-platform rifle that shoots 7.62mm X 39mm rounds, according to Jeremy Maddox, the company's chief executive officer.

"There are a lot of guys out there who are looking to do a lot of shooting very economically," he said. "The surplus [ammo] is readily available, really cheap. You can go through a whole lot of it out on the range in one day or stockpile it for whatever reason," he added. "Ammo costs are a big driving factor for these. Also, there's a lot of interest in the AK-platform rifle."

A Missouri-based gunmaker has taken two of the most popular rifles in the world — the AR-15 and the AK-47 — blended key components of each and turned it into the MK-47 Mutant.

The Kitup team got a first look at the Mutant, built by CMMG, last week at NSSF’s Shot Show in Las Vegas to include a demonstration on Range Day. Brendan McGarry broke down the details of the rifle on Military.com here.

But we also wanted to pass on the video here so our Kitup audience could break it down too.

If the video isn’t playing for you, here’s another link to it.

    There's always the AK-101...

Or you can (as I did) take a 5.56 Saiga and "unsportsterize" it back to the AK configuration...

Unfortunately that was one of the rifles I lost in the boating accident.
