The ocean is a great provider. I have had reef fish, pelagic fish, shellfish and limpets, eels, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, jellyfish, sea cucumber, shark, seaweed, etc. Never had whale though. Not ocean... My most exotic might be alligator and ostrich, I think.
hmm, well I gotta say I've never had jelly fish, but I did have octopus soup in Korea, one time. Didn't care for it. It was also in Korea that I learned I was mildly allergic to shell fish, prolly not the best place to find that out. I'm sure in China I had some stuff that was unidentifiable and I told the tour group in advance, do not tell me what I'm eating, let me try it first. Now, back in Korea, they had street vendors with some kind of beetle that fried/cooked and kids were eating it like popcorn. Then there was the vending machines with "octopus on a stick". Best thing I ate in Korea was "Black Pig" on the island of JeJu (sp?). Now that was some AWESOME pork. Used to have a restaurant in town that served alligator, it was pretty good and I know not that exotic.
I had jellyfish overseas, didn't much care for the texture. Had octopus tentacles, was like eating rubber bands that wriggled. I'll try anything once but do draw the line at spiders and balut.
Nothing that swims, walks, crawls or flies is safe in Asia. I've tried a lot of it, sometimes knowing what it was beforehand, sometimes not. I'm not a fan of seaweeds, octopus or bivalves, and those "eggs" make me squeamish, can't get them past my eyes. Raw fish, (Asian or north European) are not high on my list of faves, either, but I can swallow if it's all that's handy.
I call it bait too. But I am willing to eat bait. Don't know who Boudan is, but I won't eat balls either.
Never had Boudan...!!! Wow It's made several ways with different meats and rice Alligator or Seafood ( shrimp crabmeat) or pork You can get it steamed, smoked or fried, Good Stuff !
