After having gone through this list, and viewing the above maps, remember one thing: Many U.S. target areas have been decommissioned or changed their original mission and may not be targeted now by foreign nations. Then, again....maybe they still ARE targeted. Just think about it when YOU are VERIFYING whether you are in a target area.
I do have in PDF format a few more targeting documents, but I won't be posting them on an open page like this one. One is the first part of HI RISK AREAS of the UNITED STATES, dated 1978...the precurser to the Nuclear Attack Planning Base 1990 report (NAPB90) that consumed over 600 pages of paper. The other document worthy of noting on THIS page, is the NAPB90 National Aimpoint List, a strange document found via interlibrary loan directly from FEMA's Emergency Management Library, showing longitude and latitudes for MOST of the continental United States nuclear targets, which the US assumed would be targeted by Soviet or Chinese military in an all out nuclear war. Yay. San Fran made it onto the CA target list as Number 1 secondary target. Whoo hoo. I feel special. Does that mean that when the time comes I will get that new 'Glow In The Dark' effect?

I don't know about the line, though I do know that we have a UN building here and it will most definitely be a target. I just hope there's some kind of warning enough for me to tuck my head between my legs and kiss my butt goodbye. Haha.

If I go in the blast, I'm haunting all those bomb-jockeys and everyone responsible. Then I'll go around scaring the daylights out of any foreign troops I find on American soil. Then I'm coming to each and everyone one of you guys fallout shelter and expect milk and cookies.

If there is a slight warning, I'm thinking maybe I'll take a swim. Go to the water and dive in and keep going down for a couple minutes and hopefully have enough to keep the radiation off of me. Then I'll come back up and grab any remaining gear I have and hide in some basement until the fallout stops falling. Then I'll grab my gear, a nice ride and haul butt. Anyone care for a visitor? Hahaha.

Oh, and by the way. The Golden Gate isn't golden. It's orange. Wonder why they didn't call it the Orange Gate when it does in fact lead to Fruitville.

 

That is an OLD list, many of those bases have been closed for years.

 

I also see that there is a base missing from the Mississippi list. I am not stating it for tactical reasons, as some idjut might put it on their 'bases to hit' list. Though if they go by that list then over half the targets are worthless. There is enough to do damage, though not to wipe out the forces.

I truly wonder what their targetting selections are, as far as pre-plotted warheads and not dirty bombs. Wonder if they target just military bases capable of retatliating, nuke storage and other hard targets. Maybe they will actually target fault lines instead. Maybe major power and water centers. Maybe cropfields. There are so many things that they could try to do. And without a look into the mind of the madness there is not a bit of telling.

Maybe they'll be dumb enough to try and cause 'extra' damage by attacking nuke power plants. Haha. On a scale of crappy to downright dastardly, that choice would be crappy. Though they may be a tad smarter than that. I'm hoping not. If you are wondering why, it's real simple. Besides the first nuke that hits the power plant and kills whomever, the leakage (If they can even crack them open) will be nil compared to the initial attack. They could vent the plants now and have a team to close them up in no time. It's not like threemile island anymore. They can construct shields to place over the reactors to contain the radiation and then that would be it. Of course there is no playing in that zone, it just wouldn't add to the original blast and damage.

Just makes you wonder what they will target. Using China as a reference point. I think Russia would attack DC (Home of the capitalists). Iran would attack DC and maybe try to break NORAD and maybe our silos. China, they would most likely be the most pointed and attack all targets of a certain kind unless they have a program to the madness. Hope they don't try to take out all different types of targets I have mentioned. That would surely be a great inconvenience. Who knows what those communists would do. Crazy people. Just my thoughts.

 

I would imagine that aside from possibly some headed to the military bases the majority would mostlikely be upper atmosphere detonations to increase the effects of the EMPs and fall out. An EMP created from high detonation would do a lot more wide spread cripleing damage than a ground detonation since the area effected would be so much larger and NOTHING electronig from your phone to your watch to your car or most anything else made in the last 50 years or more would work then add the fall out causing the radiation poisoning and such and its most likely that any of the larger nuclear powers could blanket us from cost to coast with EMP and fallout so specific targets may not be so much of a concern anyway. Just my thoughts/guess.

 

Has to be a ground burst to produce fallout. The fallout is dirt and dust, kicked high into the atmosphere by the blast. And, since the major effect of a conventional nuclear device is blast, the only reason to detonate at ground level and lose most of the yield as blast effects is fallout.

EMP effects have become almost an urban legend with their abilities to destroy anything electronic for thousands of miles. For a electromagnetic pulse to destroy all electronics is voodoo science at best, it defies the same theories it says it draws on. Any properly grounded and shielded-Faraday's Shield- electronics will survive an EMP. Michael Faraday was an English scientist that did a lot of experimentation on electricity. He discovered induction, and the unit of capacitance-the Farad was named for him. Faraday's shield was a metal barrier that stopped radio waves, interference, and can be found in all, or almost all electronics, as the metal case.

 

Probably everybody has heard static on their radio during a lightning storm, a common form of EMP. Many electronics have a isolated ground, isolated from the chassis ground to guard them from high voltage from a lightning strike. A car computer is shielded, to prevent interference with your radio.

I thought of the microwave door example, just forgot to include it. The holes are too small for the 2 GHz waves to slip through.

How many countries have tested thermonuclear devices in the last few years? Israel, India, Pakistan? Some of these were open-air.

 

I knew I had seen the maps that E.L. posted before somewhere and after doing some digging I found them. Joel Skousen has the top two maps in his book "Strategic Relocation" The book was done in 1998 but I will say it still has a lot of solid info in it. It also covers a lot more than just nuke stuff. Not a bad buy for a reference guide.

Thats interesting on the EMP and microwave... I had read somewhere... might have been here... that in a pinch... you could shove your electronics that would fit in the microwave to protect it from EMP... concept being if it cant get out ... it can't get in....

I've got two old SSB,SB,SW,LW, MW vacuum tube recievers... Hallicrafters and Grundig.... cool stuff... with antennas that aren't too noticeable.... oh and spare parts and tubes.... can't talk... but at least I can hear if there's anything out there to hear.... nice.... at night I can hear stations in the far east as well of continental....

 

I guess I won't be throwing away my old microwaves when I get a new one. Good ideas abound.

With the prevailing east winds that blow through there, a large majority of the population could be screwed. Better hope it's not a blowing your way if it happened. Trojan isn't on the list either.

 

Turn them off, unplug when not in use, and keep a couple of rolls of aluminum foil in your survival stuff. Wrapping your stuff in aluminum foil will do the same thing.

 

Good to know on the EMP stuff and the Farada cages. My understanding was that in the event of a significan EMP it killed anything not in a cage and that the cages had to be all around the stuff with the electronics insulated from the cage its self and the cage well grounded. I knew back in the 80s when I first got around PCs at school they always warned us to ground before touching the computers because much static electricity build up, at least they claimed, could fry the computer if you touched it and got a good spark like you do a lot of times when you grab a door knob, so I figured a lot of the micro electronics would be similarly weak.

 

Like Ghrit said, it decreases with distance. With a conventional nuclear device, most of the yield is blast, then radiation. The circle that shows blast effects is bigger for a conventional, the neutron bomb was the opposite, having a larger radiation circle than blast circle. The EMP is much worse within the blast radius, which may be a moot point. If the blast blew your car off the road, you probably got heavy enough a dose of gamma ray radiation you only have an hour or so to live. Whether your car radio works at that point is just a moot point.

That's the current draw that the junction size of the micro electronics is not designed to carry.
