Interesting bit of kit I've been meaning to make a video about for a while now.

Bought in 2010 for $50 and it's never let me down...

They don't make them like this anymore and I was wondering if anyone else owns this type or maybe the newer model?

 

Gasps and clutches chest. A survival type post?! Lol. Isn't that what they used to called their guide lighter? Walmart had a similar version for a while, but I don't know if it had the O rind seal.

 

Yes I have a similar one, bright orange. Gas and electric coil, so nearly impossible to blow out. One problem though, the battery is dead, and no one has been able to get it open to replace the battery. So it is gas only now, but still works OK otherwise.

 

I had thought to get one of the orange ones. I bought a micro torch from a head shop and even though it's gas only I have yet to have it blow out in even heavy wind. Best five bucks I've ever spent on survival gear. Wish I had bought at least a dozen.

 

So does it no longer self-ignite now with the failed battery?

Does the screw on the base not release the armored shell from the main housing?

 

It does still ignite, it is piazo lighting, but no, it will not seperate, no matter how much force is applied.

 

So what's the battery for if the piazo is still lighting it up?

 

Electric coil. With both on, the light is nearly impossible to blow out. It is a two stage lighter. The coil keeps the gas lit, as well as add heat.

 

Well you could always get a butane torch as well.... A little bit bigger but easier to maintain.

 

I've got propane, mapps gas, and oxy/aset, on board my truck. I'll manage.

 

I def wouldn't use the Oxy/aset to light a cigarette though

 

I've used it for things as delicate as a frozen door lock. a cigarette is child's play.
