So what did you put away this week?

Got some more batteries and toilet paper. Also picked up 6 cans of spam roast turkey. Last but not least two more divisible 1 ounce stagecoach silver bars.

 

I did a job for a bee keeper, when no other company would. he had bees trapped in the building, with no way to get them out, because the door was broken. I fixed it, while he stood by in the full bee suit, and a smoker (not good to smoke bees if it can be avoided, many die). In thanks when I left, he gave me small jars of honey, of all 6 types he sold, and no two were alike. buckwheat honey is nothing like apple honey, and neither is even close to orange honey. You get the idea. What the bees pollinate changes the make-up. Orange honey was golden with highlights, while buckwheat honey was nearly brown. So there is a lot of variation in honeys. and all of them were good I liked buckwheat and butter on biscuits .

 

I take it that's one of those basic sewing machines that just sews without any of the 'frilly' crap? Mom and I have been looking for one. We bought a fancy one a while back and we thread it according the instructions but no matter what we do, it always bunches up underneath where the needle goes down so it's worthless.

Date sugar, that's something else I wanna try. And I plan to get some blackberry honey when we do our grocery shopping this month. Maple syrup hopefully too. I love to get some clean snow in a dish and put maple syrup on it. Love maple candy too, how it melts in your mouth. Molasses might not be good in coffee, but brown sugar isn't too bad, it gives it an almost caramel flavor. And I was pleasantly surprised to see organic figs added to the bulk foods section of the grocery store yesterday. I LOVE FIGS!

 

I don't give a fig for figs, but I use brown sugar in my coffee, when I run out of normal sugar. It's not bad at all. I have used honey as well.

 

This was meds week. My asthma is only a problem a few months out of the year, but my prescriptions are unlimited supply for 12 months. Ditto the pain pills for my back... I rarely take them so the vast majority goes into the stock pile. Went in to get everything renewed, and the doc gave me a sack full of free Advair and Ventolin samples. Between filling prescriptions and freebies, I've got enough inhalers, pain pills, muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, antihistamine and anti-acid reflux pills to last a year if I actually used them daily like I'm supposed to. The way I use them, it's dang near a 12 year supply, hehe! I also swung by Sams Club and got a 2 pack of 500 count bottles of Acetaminophen and another of Naproxen, and a bottle of Hibiclens from CVS.

 

I feel your pain. Mom had an old school one, really simple with no bells or whistles. It never screwed up. I had a new one, fancy schmancy and couldn't stitch anything without wadding everything up underneath. One day mom mentioned something about a new machine. OMG OMG, sez I. I want your old one! Too late, she traded it in for $20 off a new one. UGH!

Fortunately my husband's ex abandoned her storage building not too long after he and I got married, and since she'd put his name on the account we got the notice to pay up. When we went to pay her bill and clean it out, there were two old sewing cabinets with equally old machines in it. Not treadle old, but pretty close.

 

Our fancy one didn't have pointers on the machine, and the instruction book was pretty much worthless. It would tell you to thread something, but not specify which direction to thread it from. We even got professional help to figure it out, still wadded up. BAH!

I was given a choice of cooking or sewing in school, it was a required class. I learned to cook to be able to feed myself no matter what, but I did learn some sowing as well. i would like to be better at it than I am, but yes, @BTPost, i can make serviceable clothing. as well as the hammock I am working on, and sheathes for my tools, My duck blind for the boat, and the case for my butcher's tools.

My grandmother taught me to sew starting when I was 4. There's a quilt or two still floating around that I made back when I was 8 or 9, and I can sew up pants and shirts by hand, without a pattern if I have your current clothing for a template. Or I can do it without, if you don't mind rocking medieval fashions. That said, I prefer to use a machine. Plus I live in sarongs 8 months out of the year and they don't require any sewing to make.
