Batteries, three sets of head lamps, another 5 gallon can... with gas, a back-up invertor for the rig. We did fall consolidation on clothing, bedding and assorted stuff now that we are empty nesters once again.... all usable items went into storage containers for future needs.

There was canned tuna and norwegian beer on sale down at the supermarket so I packed the old suzuki full and packed that away. I've been willing to kill for a beer so many times I figure that will be one hell of a barter item :)

Turkeys are on sale for the holidays! Since United limits one per purchase, they got to see me go through the checkout line four times in a row one day, and four more a few days later. Vac sealed up a bunch of half breasts, sliced breasts, leg quarters, wings and tenderloins. All the scraps I pulled from the carcasses were vac sealed for stir fries and whatnot. Vac sealed a bag of hearts and gizzards, and another of turkey tails to smoke later for turkey tail stew. Roasted the carcasses and then used them to make turkey stock... 27 quarts worth. Took the livers and necks and drippings from roasting pan and made a ton of giblet gravy, poured it into muffin pans, froze, then threw I don't know how many 2 serving gravy bricks into a ziplock in the freezer. Picked up another turkey today, will be the last one.

Picked up two 20# propane tanks off Craigslist for $10 each, both in good shape. I'll get 'em filled Monday.

Just had a setback this morning. Actually, it looks like I had a setback a week or so ago, but didn't notice it until this morning.

Went to put up some Christmas decorations (yes, my wife is that person - what can I say, I love her...) and realized that the power to the outlet was dead. Unfortunately, that's the same breaker that powers the outside freezer. Sure enough, opened it up and found a freezer full of thawed out stink.

Lost several pounds of chicken, ground beef, frozen veggies, cube steak, and a couple of buffalo flank steaks. Spent several hours hauling the freezer out to the street, hosing it out, cleaning it with bleach, then let it air out... lather rinse repeat... until the stench was somewhat tolerable. At least it happened before we got our thanksgiving supplies.

Now to start the process of stocking back some frozen goods again. (sigh)

As an electrician can I say that your freezer should have a dedicated circuit (as opposed to a general purpose circuit with several receptacles serving various plug in devices). The only other thing I would consider would be a high mounted receptacle (7ft or so off floor) on the inner wall near where the freezer is outside. I would plug a night light with a green bulb in that receptacle. Should that light go out you should immediately check power to your freezer. jus sayin

You could also put a UPS on your freezer. It would put out an audible alarm when it has a loss of main power.

I built one of those for my dad's breathing equipment, so he would be sure to wake, if he lost power. used a car alarm, a relay, and an outside 12vt battery source for the alarm.

UPS is not required.... Just an Audible Alarm that goes off when the power to the freezer goes off.... Tells you to check the breaker, or start the backup Genset....

Kell can correct me on this but I believe if you have a UPS with external output you can tie it into your security system which would put an alert on your panel within your house (which would trigger a call from your monitoring station as well if you have that feature). Useful if you do not go in the garage or basement area often and that is where you have a critical item such as a freezer or secondary refrigerator.

Any audible alarm would work well for this solution. A UPS gives you an extra few minutes to absorb any power spikes or brownouts...at least till you can trip the ATS manually and go to a backup source such as a generator.

Freezers will stay cold for Hours, if you do NOT open the Door... Much longer than any UPS will run the Compressor inside them.... Alarm deals with the issue, and costs pennies compared to a UPS.... If your not home to hear the Alarm, you will lose the contents anyway....

yes, you can set up any number of triggers for alarm systems. what I used, would only shut up if you yanked the 12vt, or power came back on. if so, the relay opens again, and sound stops. it uses no (real) power, unless the alarm is sounding. i have a few pics here someplace, if you wish.

Okay, I will just throw out my UPS then....;)
But I beg to differ, that hold time protects me from power flickers and such... not just the hold of the freezer for a duration that may or may not last till I get home.... but that extra time is worthy for me.

Thanks Kell, I was just trying to illustrate a couple of different alert options. Your professional opinion was needed to confirm my "guess" on the capability to do that action with an security panel.

for a computer, yes, but not for a freezer. the compressor pulls so much juice, and you would gain so little time, it would likely just burn it out. Motors pull alot of amperage at start up. it's really not designed for that kind of load.

Agreed that you need a hefty UPS... but I am only suggesting an alert and minimal protection from spikes... not really carrying the load for a long time unless you can afford a hefty price tag for the appropriate UPS. Better to have a genie set up with an ATS to pick up the load right away in that case.
