I am on a short holiday with the family in Europe. My boss emailed and asked me to take an extra week of vacation to get on the right schedule when I come back. So, an extra week in Europe, at the end of September, Hmmmm, what to do?
Booked a flight to Munich the end of the week. Going to spend 5 days there during Oktoberfest!! I am headed to the Mecca for Beer devotees! Pictures to follow!!!

I have reservations at Hofbrauhaus, one of Munichs oldest beer halls founded in 1589 by the Duke of Bavaria. And a trip to Andechs Monastery.

"The Benedictine abbey and Baroque church are situated on Sacred Mountain (Heiliger Berg) in Upper Bavaria, on a site originally occupied by a castle before the monastery was built. Andechs has been famous since the Middle Ages as a place of pilgrimage and for its brewery, and you can enjoy both.
Visit the monastery and take in the views of nearby Lake Ammersee, then settle in at the beer garden for lunch with a mug of monk-brewed beer before return transport to your Munich hotel "

Just got home a few days ago from Oktoberfest in Munich. WOW!! Awesome. It's like Mardi Gras and the state fair all rolled up together. But with lot's of beer!! The news is saying that as many as 6 million people came from all over the world and drank enough beer to fill two olympic sized swimming pools. I did my share to contribute! I tilted a few steins to my Monkey friends and family. But not enough to do any polka dancing! As promised here are some pics.

As an almost 100% Penna Dutchman, I can say that life without pretzels is difficult, but can be done. (Had to suffer thru a couple periods of time when the real article was hard or impossible to find.) But I'm near enough to the homeland now that I can get 'em when I need 'em. There's a run to Reading for a restocking in the near future --

(Beer has always been easy to find, tho' some of it approached the quality of, ah, horse drippings.)

Remote locations are cheap insurance.

The beer at the monastery was great. Them monks sure know how to brew beer. My home brew never tasted that good. Must have something to do with the celibacy thing.

I used to brew beer but when I moved to Virginia we bought a house with town water and a water bill, so I stopped brewing. Also, my taste buds changed a bit. I used to love IPAs that were in the 100 IBU range. I still do, but I can only drink them when it's cold out. When the weather is really hot out, I like drinking Miller Lite. But my favorite beer is Guinness. I can drink it in the morning, I can drink it when I'm hung over, and I can drink it if it's warm. It's too expensive though, so I don't drink it as much as I'd like. My favorite brew pubs are Glacier Brewery in Anchorage, Vermont Pub & Brewery in Burlington, VT and Devil's Backbone in Nelson County, VA. I want to buy BOL there, someday.

Cruisin Sloth Special & Slow

Just finished racking / bottling / starting just under 200L . Almost all day . -9c outside , so swinging a hammer or backhoe is too cold.

I brew light summer swill to porters .. Some are great Others are so-so . I did have one batch go skunky (bat's piss ) . Used it to clean the septic tank

Just my point that's all .

I have drank my share of Diebels Alt. Awesome beer. One of the best I found was an Ulm beer called Gold Oxen (in german). When we would end up in Germany we took a station wagon and filled it to the front seats with cases of this beer.

Also very good was EKU Weizen (wheat) beer, in Crystal, Hefe (cloudy with yeast), Dunkel (dark) and Dunkel Hefe (figure it out).

Worst beer in Germany was Eik Baum (Oak Tree). Gave me a headache every damn time, like a migraine, and I don't get migraines.

Beer Review: Diebels Alt

Ok, beer lovers. Time to stroll down memory lane to discuss your favorite beers and flavors. I begin with one of my favorites first imbided in the Diebels Alt bar in Hannover, Germany on the Marktplatz, next to the Tuerm.

This Alt style beer is defined as follows:

A German term for a top-fermenting brew. Classic examples, copper in colour, mashed only from barley malt, fermented from a single cell yeast and cold conditioned, with an alcohol content of 4.5-4.7 by volume, are made in Dusseldorf.

The flavor is great, but lends itself to s slightly maltier flavor. This was a big time favorite on my trip. I have beer coasters from over 200 different bars and breweries. I look forward to sharing these with you.

I have been sampling a lot of the different beers available on the island. Catering to primarily British consumers you have a lot of the standard European fare. None that I am overly fond of. Carling, Carlsburg and of course Heineken.
Then there is the local Turkish beer Efes that is not bad but is a little on the light side for me. But I have finally settled on my favorite and stocked the beer cooler with it. Tuborg Gold is a Danish beer brewed since the 1800's but is brewed in Turkey for the Mediterranean markets. I really like this stuff. A smooth malt flavor, nice after taste. This will be my primary go to beverage from now on.
