That right there's funny, I don't care who yar...

 

After the year my son just had...I don't doubt that letter's authenticity.

 

I have attended Navy schools at Great Lakes Illinois that had Freakin' Instructors who insisted they were Gods and never wrong. They would constantly contradict the text books that we were tested from. When we challenged their contradictions we were told, "Don't question us! We are always right". When I as a student would then black out the offending text, I was threatened with charges of destruction of government property. When I asked to leave the room to talk with the senior instructor I was denied. Although my class had 4 fleet returnees and no lack of intelligence, and a higher average then any class for years and years, and I was carrying a 97%+ average, I was threatened with a class drop, and told not to question the instructors again ever. I completed the course first in my class but received some of the worst evaluation marks in my entire 22 year career. Some instructors and school systems just plain SUCK. I hope some shit head from CNET (Commander of Naval Education and Training) reads this and wakes up.

 

Some instructors forget what it was like to be a student squaddie, or they only too well remember what it was like to be bullied by instructors who abused their authority, and see it as their mission to mete out the same kind of tyranny to those they now feel to be their lessers.

As a tactics instructor, I tried to impart knowledge with some degree of humility, coax and coach where appropriate, dissect remorselessly doubtful solutions, give the occasional indolent student a kick up the bum, and get students to think on their feet to deal with the unexpected. My job was not to train officer candidates as unthinking automatons that follow orders unquestioningly without regard to the circumstances. My job was to train young men and women to lead and command soldiers to survive on the battlefield and to do their utmost to achieve the missions given them. Some of those I trained have served in Iraq and Bougainville,...and some have achieved field rank as unit and sub-unit commanders. I like to think that I helped them on their way.

 

I learned in boot-camp (way back when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth) there were only three ways you could do things. There was the right way, the wrong way and the Navy way. The Navy way may not always be the right way but it will never be the wrong way. It is "the way" you will do things while you are here!!! It was the same way with the schools.

 

Maybe so maybe not. I have attended Navy schools at Damneck and San Diego that taught the same courses as Great Mistakes. Great Mistakes was a moniker long before I went there. They are morons! You teach someone wrong in ordinance and it goes unchecked, someone can die. San Diego and Damneck ran excellent courses.
