I'm trying to contact a Baltimore friend to see how bad it is. EDIT. Friend said he's fine, he was about 15 miles s/w of derailment at the time. no additional news to report.
Our infrastructure is falling apart. Bridges failing, trails derailing. This seems like another page out of atlas shrugged. Combine that the the government going after successful companies and vilifying the wealthy.
Interesting article..... I will be waiting to see just what "exploded" during this incident. Could have been a propane tank, that was nearby, or any number of things. Truck Diesel Fuel burning from the collision, heated something, that let go violently....(Sodium Chlorate & Diesel Fuel, would do it) It is not like a train can stop, on a dime. It takes hundreds of yards, at ANY speed. Idiot Truck Driver, very likely caused the incident, by stopping on the tracks, or trying to beat the engine.... Dumb, just dumb...
And the say there are no toxic release into the atmosphere- makes you wonder if they just said that to keep the panic down initially.. As 0-6 said, we will see what the truth really is at some point.
It appears from the article that Terephthalic Acid was what exploded... but is not hazardous except to buildings near by when it explodes
It just doesn't look like a compound, that is liable to explode, even when caused to burn. There are NO Nitrogen, Chlorine or Bromine components in it, just Oxygen, Carbon, and Hydrogen. It would seem to decompose into H2O and CO2 directly. Would make a good fuel for the Sodium Chlorate, however the Oxygen balance is way off. The Diesel Fuel would make a much better fuel source. Interesting.... Very interesting.....
My guess is, the reporter got bad information about what was on the train, or it's just shoddy reporting --both are highly likely.
or the Reporter, didn't get the FACTS straight, from a Hazmat SpokesPerson TalkingHead, who has little Knowledge of Transported Chemicals, and including the Fog of the Incident, where No One Knows Anything about Anything....
You ever talked to railroad personnel about cars' contents? They are very closed mouthed (and suspicious of anyone asking)!
We have a couple of Monkeys, that run CSX Trains for a living.... Maybe they will chime in on the REAL Details.....
Never bet against BTP, hee hee.....glad mine's home and it wasn't him. CSX should really do more rail upkeep and be better to their crews. Things were much better under Conrail....
BT you won the bet. trust me the railroad knows what went on ( railroads are better at keeping things on the down low unlike Obumhead and his clan ). Their are cameras in almost every loco plus black boxes that record everything the engineer does. with any haz mat ,truck our rail, you have to know what you are hauling just for the simple fact that you could be fined 10 grand out of your own pocket. Their is way to may variables, how fast was the train running, track conditions, how the train was built ( lot of emptys on head end and loads on the rear has tendency to pop the emptys off the rail in time like this ) what was the truck hauling (orm haz mat). just way to much unknown. but i guarantee the railroad knowns. railroad has more power then the goverment its a big money corp. plus if a small part was the railroad fault big big law suits. i have see rail cars full of z71 pickup and cadillacs in a derailment. the railroad lines them up and runs them over with a bull dozer and sell them a scrap. the railroad at one time sold the car and truck instead of crushing them until their was a accident and found out the cause of the accident was from the derailment, so for the railroad it is cheaper to crush them. I am not some company suck @#% just a union man try to support my family. The railroad have not changed since they started still very cut throat and its all about the money!!!
Silly Monkeys.... I wouldn't take that bet because anyone working for the railroad - who would like to keep working for the railroad - knows better than to post their version of the details of any accident. The RRs have spokesmen to give folks the warm and fuzzy, not-too-detailed details. Theoretical causes? Perhaps. But details? Nah.
