Citizen Eco-Drive crono, Seiko 5 automatic and a 60's or 70's USA made Sears pocket watch.

Put the Citizen in a drawer for 2 weeks still running.

G-Shock. Somewhat bulky but someone once dropped a 45lb plate on it and not a scratch. Mine has a low amber backlight that's decent for light discipline.

I had a Bulova watch but got sick of it eating batteries, plus the face scratched real easily. I haven't worn a watch in about 8 months and have been searching for a new sturdy stylish one.

I feel naked without my watch; I've been wearing them since gradeschool. I don't comprehend the new fad of using your phone to tell time, when all you have to do is twist your wrist to see it.

Bulova- third one I have had. Only issue with the last one is it did not survive a drop and cracked the lens.

Tonite it's an Andre Bouchard 17 jewel mechanical. Plain, functional, and a good back-up when my Hamilton is in for a tune-up. I can't find a lot of history on this one, but it keeps time well and never needs batteries.

I don't have a phone either so basically I am clueless on the time. I could say I use the sun, but that would just be BS. But if I had a choice I would rather have a watch then a phone.

I've been wearing a Citizen Eco-Drive dive watch for the last year. As long as it gets some sun every day or two, it should keep on going until it's internal rechargeable lithium battery goes out. The paperwork says 20-25 years...

I would rather have a mechanical watch that you have to wind once a day. I had a Timex dive watch like that when I was back in college 20 years ago. It lasted about 3 years before the winding mechanism broke. I could never find another like it again.

I've broken every watch I've worn, sooner or later. I no longer wear watch or rings. The risk of getting hung up in a machine is too high. I do, for dress occasions, have a white gold pocket watch. IMG_20130530_172148_459.

I just noticed that people on Ebay are claiming my watch is "rare" and asking $300 for it. Some are selling these used for more than they are worth new. This is sad, but only an idiot would buy them. Casio has come out with several new versions, each solar watch just as good as this one and sell for around $100 MSRP.

By the way, my AWG-101 is still ticking fine, 3 years after I bought it.

Bump for newbs and input from the olds.

See post #8. FWIW, I've not sent it in for periodic maintenance like they say I should. I've had this Invicta 8926 Automatic since '07, and it has been faithful since regulation the same year. But it's gone into poor behavior mode (can't set the date, for one thing) and has been battered around pretty heavily, time to send in or replace. Also, FWIW, I paid 200 frns for it back then, (list was 275) the same watch is on Amazon for 80ish frns today. They will want nearly as much to rehab at the factory (after a 28frn admission fee and a month or so off my wrist) as the original cost as near as I can tell. Looks like new is the way to fly for me.

Have to say, after years and years of winding and battery replacements, automatic is the way to go. The only times its been off my wrist is when I've been playing with oil changes on the car and similar things. Yes, I know that cleaning oil out of the band links is a PIA, only took one of those lessons to fix it well in my mind.

I love my Hamilton automatic. I do send it in evey few years to get cleaned and regulated.

As a SHTF watch however, a quartz solar powered watch is the way to go I'm my opinion.

I have a few solar quartz watches and I can pull them out of a drawer after a year and as soon as they see light, they wake up and the time is correct with a minute or so. You can't beat that reliability with a stick :)

My favorite is my Citizen Eco Drive.

For EDC it is my Hamilton automatic that I go to most often. Simple, reliable, and there is something about a mechanical watch that feels right.

Wow, cool topic. Thanks for the bump.

They say watches are on the way out because pretty much everything has a clock in it now and young people don't think watches are cool. This so-called "trend" does not jive with the huge selection of watches available out there. And my anecdotal observations indicate that young people do wear watches, although they are a minority.

Anyway, I have two watches. One is a ten dollar Casio cheapie that I wear mostly at work. I am an electronics technician and I'm not going to spend real money on a nice watch only to bang and smash it on transmitter racks, carrying tools, setting up equipment, etc. If the watch gets broken or the battery croaks, that's ok....the "work watch" is by design a throwaway item. I usually get about a year and a half out of one before it busts or I just get tired of it and want something else.

My "good watch" is a digital G-Shock that I wear on weekends or when I want to look decent. They are about $30-$60 and are a great value for the dollar. I love the look, and they are definitely functional.

I remember a while back reading in Forbes or one of those business-related publications that buying a high-end watch is usually a poor allocation of funds. The reasons they gave were that except for small number ultra-exclusive brands (like Rolex), watches depreciate like cars and are not collectively "better than" the budget models. The digital watches in particular all typically have the same basic guts; you are really buying a case and a band.

I managed to get the stem of my USMC issued Hamilton caught on some brush again and jerked it right out of the watch. Only bright spot while it was away for repair was the watch shop finding me a couple back-up mechanicals. One is a very plain Andre Bouchard 17 jewel that's tough as nails and had just been cleaned. The other is a flashy Gold Bulova 23 automatic with a Speidel Twist-o flex band that's the only comfortable flex band I've ever worn.

Getting old watches for the cost of the repair bill isn't something I can do every day, but you can bet I'll keep trying. Quality mechanical watches and old bullet molds will always be a good investment.

I haven't had a watch for a few years myself. Mainly because I use my cellphone for the time now, but honestly I don't see the point in having one. In a SHTF scenario, I don't think it will be too important, unless you have to take medication at a specific time every day.
