This seemed kinda neat to me. I just seen in a article in popular mechanics that stihl now has a Lazer type thingy that u can place on your chain saw that will show you the direction the tree will fall {or is susposed to} the when on the tree on the ground the lazer can be adjusted to cut the log into desired lenghts ... {sorry i dont know how copy links and threads or i would} This is for those us that are not expert tree choppers and loggers!!!
What I'd like is a laser beam that cuts trees down. Just think, fells the tree, cuts it up and light the fire too !
Gimmick Plus !! The laser beam that cuts trees down & bucks them wood be nice .. Here we run many Stihl’s , 260 chainsaw ,that's highly modded for me. Instead of lasers that are hard to see in daylight , use the tried & perfected method.Block & shackles ,wedges , etc. & there battery free. I'll see if I can post my Native challenge.
really anyone that has ever cut wood with a chainsaw know "you don't need no stinkin lazer" All you need to know is what and how to cut?
True , but I also use tractors & rope to pull them the correct direction. 4.5 foot base was the largest this year ,out of 50 drops, the rest will stand nakid till needed. Sloths
i don't have those tools, but I use earth anchors, and come-a-longs to make sure they go the direction I want. Sometimes, i just cut the roots, and pull them over.
Lonnng ago when i was a youngin in Norte' Centro Nuevo Mexico I cut down a smoldering wreck that had just been hit by lightin' with and old double bit. I think it was in the gila national forest, where in even though he was greatful a young park ranger blessed me out and then formally named the spot after me on a usgs map. This was well before they became gun toten' leos. To have those days back ..... And even now I have 5 working chainsaws and multiple axes and bits .
True , But being good enough to do this without gimmicks makes me look like one. while most think my cheating is the way it's done. THINK basic , and cheat as I always try. Yes Kellory , I have also dug roots , I make sure the tree will fall one direction (By Cheating) & build a big pile of dirt that tree trunk will use as a fulcrum as the tree falls pulling the stump out.. Its the smaller under 6" trunks that make me look dumb, it's the so called EZ ones that you make a mistake.
ok , So for anyone who is in the market to buy a chain and doesnt have a tractor or blocks and tackle and ground anchors or beaching gear or heavy equiptment of some sort ...Or doesnt have 5000+ acres to dick around on . this lazer that stihl puts out is kinda neat if you are interested... If not we have an entire group of very well seasoned tree cutter downers who can also share some knowledge on how to do it ...
Maybe I didn't catch it but I cant see how accurate this can be. Your bottom face cut is just one of 3 (minimum) cuts that affect where the tree should fall. Why I always have a couple wedges and a riggin axe on me. I learned fallin from a book when I was 16 and there was a whole lotta trial and error (plus run for your life we're all gonna die!) then several people helped me out. This kinda reminds me of gps and not knowing how to use a map and compass.
Journeymen tree cutters no experts here. I learned from my mothers father a WWII vet . We lost this expert in 2004 after a long fight with ALZ...... But damned if he could not do it all.
