@DMGoddess , have you had any luck with dollar store seeds in the past? Last fall at a local Dollar General, I got about 60 or 70 packs of veggie seeds for a little less than 3 bucks after tax, as the growing season was over and they were heavily discounted (90% off, originally 2-3 packs for a buck depending on type). Sweet, right? Well... Of those discount Dollar General seeds, the ones I've tried to plant have had horrible germination rates, sometimes as low as 20% or less. I'm only a novice/hobby gardener, but I use a grow light for germinating and have had great results (usually around 80-90%, sometimes better) with just about everything except dollar store seeds.

So, on the topic of this thread, my experience tells me to NOT rely on dollar store seeds should I ever find myself gardening out of necessity, and therefore not to stock up on them with the expectation that I'd be able to really use them for anything in the future.

Of course that's just my experience - anyone else out there had the same problem, or is it just me?

Not just you. I've had mixed experience in the past, until I learned to read the bloody expiration dates. These were packaged for this year. I've tried this seed company before and I had good luck. I bought some seeds from the 99 cent store (nothing special, just some flowers) and only a few sprouted at all, the plants were anemic, and they never bloomed. No more 99 cent store seeds. So far, Dollar Tree is not bad.

Well, they seem to be starving for .22's and .223's at the moment. Perhaps, when the main course is over, they would be interested in a nice after dinner .308;)

I don't make it exactly the same way twice, but here's a stab at it:

    BEEF BARLEY SOUP

    In a large stock pot

2-1/2 pounds lean ground beef, browned and broken up
    2+ heaping tablespoons minced garlic
11 to 12 ounces pearled barley
    10 to 11 cups water
32 ounces canned tomatoes, diced, with liquid
about 1 pound diced carrots (or more)
several stalks diced celery (or more)
    2 teaspoons salt
    1 tablespoon dried basil
    1 tablespoon turmeric
    1 teaspoon black pepper
    1/2 teaspoon cloves
    1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Bring to boil. Simmer, covered, about one hour. Add about 3 cups chopped frozen vegetables and cook another 20 minutes. Add water as necessary.

You can freeze or can the leftovers.

I like a thick, flavorful soup. You can, of course, tone down or increase the spices to your liking.

Thanks, I can't wait to try it. It's a bit chilly here this week, so this sounds like the perfect time. I even have everything except the tomatoes, and I can get those today.

5 lbs of rice, Hormel chili, canned corned beef hash, 4 lbs pasta, pasta sauce, flour, sugar, olive oil. Going to pick up some junk silver on Saturday.

Just found out today that usaprepares is having a big prep expo right here in my tiny little town next weekend, so I'll probably check that out. NatGeo is doing a casting call for AP, although I don't fit that mold.

You just got me grinning. I love making those fire starters, also. What are you using for containers for your fire starters after the cotton balls and the petroleum jelly are happily married?

I have been 'naughty' and haven't really stocked up on anything this week, been busy getting a jump on gardening. Got lots of lettuce/spinach sprouting, and beets/radishes are starting to. Transplanted my walking onion, lemon balm, and oregano. My rhubarb is very happy, will probably be able to harvest some of that before strawberries this year
