Last Thursday we stocked up on lightbulbs and soap. Also ordered more seeds last Monday. Not here yet. I can't do anything with them for at least a few more weeks, I just want them to have them.

Got a call late this afternoon from "Lawful Defense" gunshop in Gainesville Fl. These guys are awesome. It just hasn't been that long since I went in there an ordered a Stainless Steel 10-22 Takedown Tactical (it's not even in the Ruger catalog). You can see the Tactical taledown version here Ruger® 10/22 Takedown® Autoloading Rifle Models .
    .
The punchline here and the only reason they made the sale is twofold. One I wanted SS, and I wanted the threaded barrel with flash suppressor. They said no problem, we can get it. I said, but it's not even in the catalog. They said, really we can get it. I said how much. They said same as the blue steel tactical ($399 plus tax, plus $5 background check). The SS takedown without flash suppressor is listed at $419. I really did have doubts but I ordered it (no money down) (you don't want it when it comes in, we can sell it). WOOOOOO HOOOOOO, I got it today. Exactly what I wanted. Just for the record, my order for this went in on 26 Jan 2013. see post 2051

I got 40lbs of Jasmine rice in 2 lb bags because the stupidmarket doesn't have 20lb bags any more.

The y had 5lb bags but they were $.05/lb more than the 2 lb mini-bags.

Gots to pay attention to unit pricing. [tongue]

Chapter 1 in my prep journey was some food. After a lot of thought, I came up with a tiered system based on shelf life and duration of use. I put a 1 week/2 pers supply of MRE/retort packed foods built into complete meals into a five gallon jobber. Those have a cumulative best consumed date of three years from now (due to certain components)....that is my short term/short duration unit.

Currently in progress is canned and boxed goods from Wally World. Made 1 gallon mylar bags of complete meals for two (e.g. can of Hormel chili and 1 cup of white rice, separately bagged prior to being mylar'd up).....this will eventually be a three-month supply with a shelf life of five years.

Also procured 2000 rds of .22LR, and 537 rds of 5.56 NATO. Today I'm picking up a Walther P22 pistola.

My current concern regarding food is this: I always read that folks rotate their stock into their daily use....but, the things I store are not the things I eat normally. I would eat them and enjoy them, no doubt. I grew up on canned stuff. But, I am very health-conscious for the time being, and I just don't eat canned chili and MREs. I don't bake things except on holidays. So, if this food doesn't get used in a SHTF sitch, should I just donate it and buy new stocks?

Growing food is not an option right now; I live in an apartment.

    Welcome to SM.
Sounds like you got a plan and have taken some first steps...that's more than 98% of America. Keep in mind that your canned food will usually last substantially longer than the stamp says so you aren't in any rush to worry about what to do with it...so forget it and keep stocking up till you have a 1yr supply for 1 person or approaching the end-of-can life stamp. There is no need to worry about "what to do if i don't use it" now or in the near future. You can count on that food being more expensive at expiry date than it is now cuz inflation on food is rampant. Think aboot how much less it cost u 3 years ago for a good steak than it is today. Where I am in Canada, it's went from $6-7 for a 16oz prime rib to $10-12 on special in the last 2 years alone.

Growing food is ALWAYS an option if you really wanted to do it bad enough.
Even if you just start some potatoes, strawberries or other multi-year crops in the bush where you hike, fish, whatever. You can turn this into a habit easy...throw a bag of potatoes in the dark on some cardboard and mist them with a bit of water...as they grow eyes, take them with you whenever doing an outdoor activity and plant'em.
I've got a dozen or so little tatter patches along the river close by where I fish...it took so little effort and gave me a good feeling to plant'em.

    *on topic*
I'm picking up 3oz of silver for $90 tomorrow, a big sack of apparently perrenial kale seed for $20 and gonna hit the chineese fruit market for some end of shelf life stuff to ram through the juicer into mason jars for work next week.

Damn, I've never even thought about that. Wicked good idea. Next time we go hiking, wifey is going to look at me even crazier than she does now!

True story about food prices....ridiculous. I have to go grocery shopping here after work, and I think I'll throw a few more preps in the cart. Been looking at storing flour and grits, but can't get a definitive answer on how long it will store in mylar and buckets. I have found two general classes of answers: "not long" and "very long".
