Indeed I do...

The early days of black powder gunnery was a time when the dark art of firing a petard...was as dangerous to the bombardiers as it was to those on the receiving end. It's elementary military history....and I have an interest in things military.

Latterly the petard is a weapon platform used in specialised tanks, (called "funnies", by the British in WWII) that fire a projectile about the size of a metal trash bin. It was used for obstacle breaching, and taking out concrete fortifications like pillboxes, weapons embrasures, bunkers, and suchlike. The petard tanks were much more reliable and less of a danger to the operators than it's ancient forebears....but it would draw the crabs like you wouldn't want to know.

More likely, there is a government regulation requiring all loads on this type of railcar be strapped down. That same pencil pusher had a 2 hour 4 martini lunch and forgot about the tarp. When it comes to the Government, "Common Sense" is a long forgotten concept.

Not to bust the funny party, but it is a drop side gondola car, straps are most likely a safety for the sides. most drop sides have a safety lock w/ air cylinders to operate the sides, but my best guess is that they are broken on this car.

 

^^you might be right, but then woudn't they have had to put the straps on before the load went in, to keep the sides up??

That is the first correct answer I have ever heard for that phrase. though, this is the version I am more familiar with: A 90lbcast iron cannon placed on a stand, or hung from a bipod against a door. If the bombadeir failed to exit the blast site in time, he had a nasty habit of dying in pieces,of gory rain.
