Good idea or dumb idea?

I am thinking about mounting a Maxpedition Janus pouch in line with the sling on my AR M4 style carbine. Mounted on the butt stock end of course. I'm thinking a small bottle of CLP, a spoon for stripper clips, lighter, leatherman, water purification tablets and a space blanket if it will fit.

Anyone tried this? Any tips or tricks?

    Thanks

What will that add to the weight of the carbine? An additional pound?

Personally, I'd rather attach the pouch to me instead of the gun or it's sling.

Agree. The extra weight might throw the balance off as well as interfere in some unknown way. Fanny pack that stays with you after shedding the ruck for action?

I have to agree with Visutrac and Ghrit.

My thought on the matter is this: Separation of duties is important with jobs and equipment. Possibly the CLP and spoon for the stripper clips strapped on in an un-obstructive manner. However, even those I'd keep with other weapons-related items (e.g., the cleaning kit) in a pack or pouch, and, in my case, out of the way where they won't be lost! Besides, you don't want your weapon unnecessarily encumbered.

I have tried the single magazine "tacticool" pouches that go onto the buttstock when I was frequenting FOB's and had to carry a live mag with me at all times but couldn't have it in the M4. I couldn't charge the rifle after I inserted the magazine because the dang thing would get in the way of the charging handle, so I scrapped that idea pretty quick.

As weight grows, speed slows; plus the risk of it getting snagged with quick moves increases.

I second this. Many of these items are great for fobbits who never need to worry themselves with actually employing their weapons. Whatever mods you decide on, make sure you try out your weapon in a realistic scenario. You might find something that you really like turns out to cause problems

Put the CLP in the buttstock well where it was designed to go, along with the cleaning kit. Put the rest back into your carry kit...where it should be anyhow.
Oh yeah...M4gery. well, you get what you pay for. lol

As I've never owned one your comment has me curious; what is so bad about them?

There's no compartment in the buttstock of the M4 like there is in the M16.

Get a stock with storage or grip storage. Small oil bottles can be had... find some sample products in small packages.

After giving it a try this falls into the "dumb idea" category. The Janus pouch is a nice little bag that is going to get used for black powder hunting and possibly some creek fishing.
