Ah, the URSA 6 by Blackwater. I have no idea how that coating will hold up on that German tool steel, but it certainly looks solid. There are a couple of things which detract me, aside from the $325 price tag: 1. Hollow handle to store survival items (seriously?) 2. The handle grip is a concave design, fitting the hand in fore grasp, but in reverse would be uncomfortable (for me). I fancy the standard, straight hilt designs for combat weaponry. Of course, I reserve any final judgement until I actually hold the blade...and I very much doubt that will happen since I don't see adding it to the collection. Overall, it looks like a serious knife. I love the edge design --no frills, perfect for combat. It has a rugged, chiseled tip for strength and a sleek form. Too many folks are going for the warped blade designs, making sharpening in the field a hassle.
In all honesty, the lifetime guarantee against loss was really the only appealing thing about it to me. I missed the hollow handle. That surprises me.
I sure wouldn't discourage some nice person from gifting me such a tool. I like the blade profile and features built into it. Price not so much. As to the hollow handle, from the looks of it the only way I see possible would be to skeletonize the tang and have hollowed out handle scales. Silly but with modern tool steels I'm sure it's rigidity wouldn't be compromised. Personally I'd have different solid Micarta scales made for it that didn't have the directional grooves anyway. Of course that only adds to the overall cost of the knife. Sure wouldn't pay that kind of money to just have one sent to me. I'd need to hold it & investigate the 'hollow' handle to see just what the deal really is. Would also like to find a torture test of the blade to gauge its strength & durability. Byte
I don't think you can compare the hollow handle in the Extremis to one of the Rambo knockoffs that allow you to put a bunch of junk in the handle. Although the Extremis has a place to put stuff within the handle, the tang goes throughout the whole knife--think of it as weight savings. $0.02
I dunno. I am refunding your $0.02 =) For a whopping $325, I expect these people to call it something like, "highly resilient removable grips for additional secret storage of survival kit."
For that price, I would expect it to already be stocked with fire starters, and a fishing kit. and a few aspirin.
Here... if you just want something cheap: ThinkGeek :: Ka-Bar Zombie Killer Knives But, IMO, that knife is part tool, part art form. Granted, there are many other things you could buy with the extra $$. In another time, I would have something like that. Not now. However, I was just posting on the knife's panache....I wasn't advocating that you go out and buy one. I may like to look at a Ferrari . . . doesn't mean I'm going to go buy one.
Oh, I know, man. It is an awesome looking blade. =) And that Ka-Bar knife kit looks like fun! And it looks like the "war sword" is sold out. Checked Ebay, naturally. For two to three times the price, you can buy one there...lol
I bought all of them a while back (individually was cheaper than combo for some reason). The "war sword" is the worst one in my opinion--but does "look" the coolest. Then blunt end machete is my fav--has a good feel. The tanto is very heavy and too ungainly for my tastes. The main reason I bought them was the value of the knife AND the nice sheath. Right tool for the right job comes to mind but there are many out there at 1/3 the price that are just a good or better. I keep a double edged fighting knife in my BOB and a "Rambo" sized one also. There is a real machete alongside just in case.
As knife fighting is messy and blood is slippery, a grip material which provides a lot of friction is best. Reverse Icepick? Usually that is for "cutting" the opponent and not killing.
I guess, if you prefer. I am not here to talk about combat tactics and puff out my chest...but I can take care of myself. Been around a little while. =) Besides, everybody is an expert online, didn't you know that?
"Blush" is a decorator's term for RED. Who cares? I can sit in the cafeteria at work and talk sports if I wanted to get that numb feeling in the back of my head, but I don't. =) I guess at the end of the day, your point was made no matter how literal and precise you wish to be. Knife to the head series...move!
I would buy it if it weren't for that jimping....and the price....and the fact that I'm saving up for NVGs.
One of the grips I use is the modified saber. My hands are big so the raised serrated area for the ball of the thumb would be on the joint. Which sucks and it is too expensive. CATO, I am also, but a weapon sight for the things which go bump in the night.
