as usual I am off a week o_O ...I only have a week and I am out again[gone] , not 2....so I started an emergency bag for my truck yesterday. strike anywhere matches in meds bottle, lighter, 2 candles. travel shampoo, conditioner, bar of soap, deodorant, toothbrush, floss, cotton balls/q-tips and baby wipes. Clothing: 2 pair socks, 2 panties, 1 jeans, 1 t-shirt ,1 long sleeve, old pair running shoes, 3 bandannas, and a rain suit. Towel, and wash cloth. Started a First Aid kit: Bandaids, ointment, gauze, few Advil, antihistamine, codeine, and tums (all vacuum sealed) ...... gathered all that in a couple hours last night so I hope to have it 75% completed before Thursday. I already have a car road emergency kit with flash light, jumper cables, 2 gal gas, fix a flat, salt, kitty littler, flares, bungie cords, screw driver set. After I get mine complete I will start one for my hubby & mother's cars. I also scoped out the garage found where I want to hang our BOB's. I thinking of tying them in a large trash bags to keep the spiders out. [gun]spiders.....

Hey Evil, Vasolene (petroleum jelly) saturated cotton balls make excellent fire starters. Can be stored in straight sided pill bottles or 35mm film containers. For vehicle. Also might consider tarp, space blankets, axe or hatchet, bow saw, shovel.

I've heard, but never tried, using empty bleach bottles-rinsed once-keeps water potable for longterm storage.

Here in Colorado, builders do not let anyone scavenge their unused wood---they sell it. And they get very irritated if they catch anyone grabbing from that pile without a prior "OK."

Hey Tacmotusn, I've been collecting dryer lint for a few weeks now for fire starter. I ordered a set (12 for $14) space blankets hope to have them next week. I was looking at the saws/hatchets in the garage yesterday. I need to clean/sharpen before deciding witch one will go in truck (I think the Hatchet will go in my husbands BOB) We have 3 of everything in this house so I am just now trying to get it together and cleaned up then decided where to allot it to.

Evil, second idea; once a year, pick a time (new year) (4th of July) (your Birthday), and remove dated items from your BOB and vehicles, and put them in proper rotation of your storage. Put new dated items in your BOB and vehicles. That way the items in your BOBs and vehicles are always fresh.
    .
I am assuming you have your main storage items dated and in a rotation of first in first out.

I use a load planner for the vehicles. With it I have a diagram of how it's loaded and dates of items that need to be changed out periodically.

Just got a Winchester Model 70 in .270WSM - my first 'magnum' caliber rifle.
Also finally picked up a portable kerosene heater, in case my power goes out in the expected longer, colder winter this season. Even here in north Florida, temps can get into the low teens, and on rare occasions the high single digits! This will be augmented by my little propane Buddy Jr. heater.
Been adding more canned goods to, and rotating through the older ones.
Just refilled 25 gallons of gas - I am now up to 69 gallons stored. Learned my lesson in the storms of 2008, to keep plenty on hand!

I recently bought this as a starter First Aid Kit- you do need to add to it other items you prefer to have. I added a C-collar, Ambu bags, more/different types of tape, SAM splints, suture kits, etc. (these can be picked up on the side and I found alot of them at a good price on Amazon). It's a good size and you can grab it and go with your BOB.
