iDen/ISm Secure Comms.... UpDate...

Ken C. I can't take Credit for the Original Find, of this technology, as I got a sniff of it from a Rawles Post on his site. I did however do considerable research, and started the Technical Testing of the system, here on the Monkey Site. I can tell you, that these HAVE been used by our SpecOps Brothers over "there" as backups for their $50KUS/pre unit Squad Comm Systems, with VERY Good results. These are UN-SCAN-ABLE, and UN-DF-ABLE. I have tested, and looked at the RF Emissions, on my HP Spectrum Analyzer, and confirmed BOTH these Facts. They operate in the 902-928 Mhz ISM Band, as Part 15 UnLicensed Devices, and this is NOT a Band that most Technical folks would look for Comms Emissions. There ARE commercial Units that use the same Chipset, Digital Modulation, and Spread Spectrum design, that are marketable here in the USA. Brokor gave me the lead on these, last year, and I confirmed it with the OEM. I asked them if they had any intention to add Digital Messaging between their Units, and at that time they were NOT interested, so I haven't followed up on their Product. If you read MY SECURE Phone Blog, all this information is laid out there. I purchased, and delivered, a bunch of Test Unit pairs, to interested Monkeys, over the last few years, so that I could get back, Real World Test data, on Ranges and Operational Characteristics. This data is also published in the Blog. I have a supply of Programmed SimmCards, that I can send Monkeys, that buy i355s, and i560s, off eBay that lack SimmCards, should that be required.

Comms OPSec is critical, if you don't know who might be Listening In on your Comm Links. Your story just proves this point. FRS/GMRS, and CB are never considered SECURE Comms. To few channels, and easily Scan-able, and DF-able, by anyone who is the slightest Tech savvy, as you found out. In some States, using Comm Devices, while engaged in Hunting is prohibited, by Statute, and those State Game Wardens use these techniques to find violators, and bust them.

From my experience. any of the eBay flavors will work just fine, from the $.99US, to the $5.99US... I would buy ONE of each, and then repurchase the best one, after evaluation of how it fits YOUR needs. It isn't like they cost a bunch, to find out which is best for your application. YMMV....

 

Of the two types that I have TRIES, Both are equal in Operational Features, and do well when Tested. YMMV....

 

Just a NOTE, here: There are two different USB Data-cables being marketed for the iDen/ISM SECURE Phones. One that DOES charge off the USB Port, and one that does NOT charge off the USB Port. I have some of each, and there is NO Difference between the two types, that can be seen by VISUALLY. They both have the SAME number of Contacts on the Phone end, and both do pass the Programming Date from the computer to the Phone. Apparently some do NOT have the Power Connection made in the Phone Connector. ..... YMMV....

 

Lots of solar USB chargers around these days, for charging iPhones, iPads, and such..... plenty of 12 Vdc to USB chargers as well....

 

Trying to follow Those Videos is VERY Confusing, to me... It is much easier to Download the Motorola Users Manual for your Phone, ans follow the DirecTalk Instructions. These are fairly easy to Learn and Program. Once you have Done ONE, the type, the rest use the same Firmware for DirecTalk.

 

Looks like it might do the job, from what I read, but I haven't one to test, so I can NOT be sure. Looks Promising, however. ...... YMMV....
