I cannot believe that I've been hooked by the AMC series The Walking Dead. I know that this is just a soap opera that happens to have zombies woven into the script but I do find it entertaining. As for the "survival" aspect, I have thus far found relatively little of value. So, it appears to remain in the entertainment realm for me. However, I have noticed that a number of folks have commented about how the 6" Colt Python used by Rick (one of the characters) is getting a lot of notice. Some have speculated that there may be a sizable upsurge in demand for the Colt Python (similar to how the Dirty Harry movies popularized the .44 magnum). Within the parameter of the script, I am impressed by the silent kill ability of the crossbow wielded by another character. I didn't really know where to post this but thought I'd just share here, in case any other TWD fans are visiting.
I'm right there with you. The wife and I don't miss it. I have a few .357s, but no Pythons. Perhaps I should get one to go with my monkey name. That show is a better prepper show than any of the Doomsday shows on now.
I must say I am a Walking Dead Fan as well and also see the advantage of the crossbow. I currently have one on lay-a-way at the local shop.
I watch but I DVR it so I watch when I want to . After Sundays show I can see Daryle becoming more of a leader now (he's the one with the crossbow) that Shane is gone .I'd have killed him long ago !!
Yeah, Daryl is definitely becoming a major factor. I bought the set of DVD's for the first season. I'm looking forward to doing the same for this 2nd season. It seems that when the action is taking place that it's easy to miss a thing or two; I like being able to go back and see if I missed something. But, as my zombie-tolerant wife states, they sure are killing off a lot of the characters. There must be some new characters coming along, somewhere. While it's tempting to go out and buy the comic books from where this series originated, I prefer to see it "new" when I watch it on AMC.
I bought season 1 on DVD and plan on season 2, If you get the chance check out the books pretty good reading goes almost by the show. I would have done shane in sooner too.
In that case, you should get the Zombie Survival Guide. _______________________________ Cheers - Amanda
You guys have to read World War Z if you get the time I enjoyed alot and its not filled with alot of out and out nonsense. It has a good story plot and minus the zombies could be some real life situations. I like the idea of how in the walking dead the goup has started focusing on the group and their own survival. I think Daryle in my opinon in a real world situation would be the most likely to survive and has the better skill sets. The only mistake I have seen him make so far is the loud Harley looks cool but attracts attention and leaves him open for attack
The Zombie Survival Guide was a great book, it was very entertaining. I read it out loud around the campfire one Halloween about 5-6 years ago. Very funny read that tries to explain itself with references and logic. However, Wold War Z, written by the same author, wasn't (IMHO) nearly as good. I didn't like the style he chose to write the story, first person notation leaves me with bad memories of Herman Melleville's Moby Dick. If you want to present a story with any ability to flow, and show small details beyond the character's limited perspective, then you need a different style. It's a shame, the story could have really went somewhere, if the author would have let it.
Love TWD.Also enjoyed world war z. Although based in fantasy, gives a pretty good example of when civilization collapes, society follows.
I too love TWD! Terrible survival example but entertaining none the less. And since I love everything zombie, it's the cat's meow. I've also been reading AUD (Adrian's Undead Diary) for the past couple weeks. Am loving every bit of it. Best damn zombie fiction I know of. Language warning, however. It's crude, crass & downright inappropriate at times! Might be what draws me to it...? Byte
I tried...I really tried...but I STILL don't like soap operas, and that is all the show has evolved into.
I see the characters doing some things right, but a lot of things wrong. I am amazed at some of the critiques I have read from fellow preppers. I said this on another board: we preppers keep talking about how when the SHTF, all the normal people are going to be screwed. Here we have a show where the SHTF and normal people are screwed, and we take exception to it. I started reviewing this on my blog if anyone is interested this season. I take approach it from a preparedness perspective.
