Hey guys, this is my first post so be gentle if this is the wrong category or something I have been looking at a Rossi ranch hand to keep in my truck and was wondering if anyone has one or shot one? How does the Rossi name hold up? I've heard mixed reviews on them that they are the "bottom" grade manufacturer. Thanks fellas'

There are few people here who don't have some opinion on guns. A very safe first post to cut your teeth on. Check out the Google custom search utility at the top right of the the web page next to the "Logout" hot button....type in Rossi in the text box and see what you come up with...there'll be plenty of references to Rossi guns. There is nothing wrong with Rossi. I have several Rossi firearms, some revolvers some lever guns. Taurus, Puma, Legacy Arms, and Chiappa Arms seem to have several of their models made in the same place by Rossi. I've had a Rossi 5 shot snub nose revolver for over 20 years, shot with +P on many occiasions. I have shot a Rossi 971 6" .357 in stainless and liked it very much. I have also shot a Puma 16" lever action in .357, which should be basically the same reciever as the Ranch hand. It is a well made piece, and fun to shoot. It is built like the Winchester Model 94 in .357; where the lever locks the bolt in place with two arms at the back of the carrier. It is a very strong design. If Rossi would make the Ranch Hand in stainless, I'd buy one. But alas, they only make them in blued steel.
Could you be more specific in your needs? By the statement "keep in my truck," I assume you want something small, but what will be the primary purpose of having the gun (e.g., protection from animals, from humans, hunting, I'm a big fan of Steve McQueen). Also, what is your max budget?
Just being prepared no specific use, animals, fending off rioters,etc. it's small and compact so it could fit under a seat, in a toolbox, overhead gun rack etc.
What have you read about the accuracy of that gun? Just a cursory Google search made me think it was more cool than it was useful. I haven't shot one, so I can't say...but, just from the looks, I think it would be hard to be accurate at 50 yds with that thing. If you want something small with a lot of firepower (assuming you don't live in some commie-fried state like CA), have you thought about an AK-47 with folding stock. What about an ol M1-Carbine with folding stock. I had one as a kid and really liked it.
I've shot one yesterday at a gun shop/range... my thoughts are it's a fad weapon... dosent handle as well as a pistol,,, shoot as fast as a pistol... with practice it might do ... a glock is pretty close to the same price and is easier to conceal, reload, carry,& has a similar range, when you are being chased by the zombie horde... Pro's it beats the hell out of nothing....YMMV
Like most compromise weapons the M1Carbine has more... Like most compromise weapons the M1Carbine has more more vices than virtues. It does make a better club than a pistol though.... Regards Post #8 M1 Carbine is a rifle platform spitting pistol rounds....I'm with WD01, it's better than nothing. If you inherited an M1 carbine off your grandappy it may be worth holding onto for its sentimental value alone, but if you have a wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket, there are better cost effective choices, depending on what your needs / threats are. Another disadvantage of the M1 carbine round is that is that it may not be as commonly available as the current service pistol rounds (9mm, .38Sp, .357magnum).
I think WD01 was referring to the Rossi being the fad, not the M1. But, I'm with both of you, either would be better than nothing. Although, I would rather have a Glock or AK over either Rossi or M1.

The M1 carbine couldn't be called a fad...more like an enduring fancy for ex WWII and Korean War veterans, and military re-enactors. The M1 carbine was designed to meet the needs of a particular niche in the US military, which was as a personal protection firearm for drivers, radio operators, crew served weapon operators, tankers, and soldiers in similar roles who are not taking the fight to the enemy as combat infantrymen. Although it had a nominal battle range of approaching 300 metres, its "effective" range as far as penetration and stopping power was very much less. It was more accurate than pistols at its longer ranges, but much less effective than MBRs at those same ranges. As a survival weapon, there are other better options to shoot for, so to speak, but if you have one..don't junk it. It would be a good weapon to use for firearms training, or for the women folk who are too small framed to handle a 7.62mm rifle.
I have been wanting one since I saw it in an ad a couple of weeks ago. Not for personal protection, not for taking game, only because it looked cool. Nothing like a fun gun. I have plenty of ARs, AKs, bolt guns, self defense shotguns, pistols and all of that. I would like to have one just because it looks "cool" and would probably be fun to shoot.
I actually like the m-1 carbine... to me it's the best for a light bug out weapon... in an urban environment... no over penetration better power than a .357 mag... light controlable, great out to 100 yards.... would rather have one than a mares leg of any calibre... unless it was Steve McQueens original one...
If your wanting to go the hand held pistol/rifle route then I recommend the Draco AK-47 pistol, way more firepower and about two thirds the cost. Also, way more mean looking. I keep one in my truck as a anti-highjacking - anti-ambush weapon as it is capable of putting a lot of lead out the end in a big hurry. With a red dot scope I can keep my rounds on a man size target pretty easily out to about 100 yds. which gives me room to exit the vehicle and boogie away or get to my MBR in the tool box.
