I propose that wild game number will dramatically collapse post SHTF due to any one or more of the following factors

Fuel shortage, Electricity shortage, fertilizer restrictions.

Only in the past 80 or so years have wild game populations risen due to plentiful and cheap farmlot animals for slaughterhouses. Cheap fuel to move animals to be processed to the slaughter houses. And refridgeration to transport and extend the shelf life of the butchered products at local market/consumers

Prior to that, you either consumed it, canned it, salted it, smoked it or dried your meats to extend their viability. (Ok you could freeze it if you were far enough north :: Permafrost)

It was estimated back in the 1914 that Michigan had a deer population of roughly 45k. Today that number is close to 1.5MM. We now have a hunt-able Elk population, a fair number of Moose. I attribute the rise in population to 2 things.

1st Refrigeration from the feed lots in KC to the slaughter houses in Chicago to the tables in NYC. Fresh Meat in the big city, in small towns and in your house.

2nd Responsible game management. Bag limits and sex restrictions.

but if we loose affordable fuel and/or electricity it will cause:

Unavailability of meats in supermarkets due to transportation (fuel) and availability of refrigeration (electricity)

Inability to provide grains to feedlot operations (fuel for transport and production)

The cost of meat will rise exponentially. (hint, it's already doubled in the past 5 years). Once it hits a point that most people can no longer afford it:

People are going to go looking for it live on the hoof.

Thus causing those that currently have animals for their own meat to have to defend their livestock (cattle/hog/sheep rustling) but further it will decimate the population of wild game as everyone will be in search of meat (except the vegans) and wild game will be killed more often because of the lack of methods to preserve the catch. So instead of killing maybe 1 elk per year or a couple of deer. That number will dramatically increase.

This is not just going to happen for large game, we are talking subsistence living here. Rabbits, woodchucks, squirrels, porcupines, ducks, geese, swans, pheasants, grouse, quail, doves, pigeons, starlings, nutria, gators etc. They will all become 'Bush Meat' for the masses.

So .. if you are planning on heading out to the bush post SHTF you will need to have a way to preserve your catch, and protect your lands from others that will be in the search of meat also. There will be no Quailty Deer Management programs in effect. Big bucks and this years babies are all on the menu. I hope you have additional plans on providing meat because the game left after the swarm are going to be damn smart and avoid people at all costs.

Just remember, if you shoot the last mating male or female of a game species in your neck of the woods. You'd better hope that there is a transient that wanders through your area to continue the species or .. I hope you like insects.

But what happens if a few 'Meat' hunters come a visiting your hunting grounds?

Yeah, Maybe i forgot pigs them things breed like rabbits. But they would suffer too post SHTF methinks.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that most people can't hit sh1t with bow, rifle, or shotgun. Many hoard weapons and ammo but can't use them to good effect. Trust me on this one.

True enough. but the successful ones you know, the ones that are already hunters. Will be able to provide for themselves and anyone willing to pay/trade. At least until the game becomes scarce.

Increased hunting will result in a predator / prey arms race

Increased hunting pressure will result in a predator / prey arms race.

The forces of natural selection will cull the incompetent hunters, and the survivors will breed and train better hunters....there may be some initial respite from hunting pressure for some species, and perhaps a heap of near miss experiences with incompetent hunters will breed more cunning and less naive prey. We have little evidence that a supreme being exists, but evolution by natural selection (sexual selection *) is very observable.

    * Successful hunters will have more chances to breed (mainly because they haven't starved to death, and will normally be the most attractive mates for the best of the women with superior reproductive capability. Women will not normally choose males who are incapable of defending and feeding her and her progeny.

Hunting should only be considered a supplemental - short term strategy...hunters and gathers had to live a very nomadic, uncertain, tenuous existence. Cropping and grazing, are usually more reliable means of feeding and supplying the necessities of life, but one needs to live in a fixed location for it to be viable....making one more attractive to marauders who subsist on raiding, looting and pillaging.

Whether hunting prey...or defending oneself from predation, either situation will require weaponry and the competency for using it effectively.

post shtf my tribe will do ok

And you all wonder why I love the deep south. Swamps weed out the men from the boys. Hogs love the swamps, and domestics turned out to provide future food down here bacame the basis for a big portion of the nations feral hog problem. My point is they are not considered game animals down here or many other places in the usa, and are fair game year round, some places legal 24/7. Their numbers haven't decreased one iota. Yes potential hunting pressure will increase post shtf, but someone else here stated truly that the vast majority of the hunters will be questionable as to accuracy concerns. I have seen that down here also. I have a lot of hunting relatives down here. Years ago while still on active duty and visiting some of them, I would buy a guest day pass to hunt with them at their hunt club. I was banned outright from one club and an attempt was made to do the same thing at another. Hunting ethics or rule violations were not the problem. The problem was, that in the eyes of many envious members, I was too damn lucky or some said BS. I never exceeded the club or state bag limit, but I was just too damn successful. My point is that I had a reputation justly earned. I very very seldom missed. If I shot, game was down. It was a target rich environment. Yes I took more than I needed, but it was distributed among normally less successful family members. It wasn't my family that banned me. 30 - 40 years have passed. My endurance has waned and my girth has increased. I still hit what I aim at an harvest all the game I want. I pass on a whole lot more game than I ever take, just because, I don't want the work of processing it. I am not meaning to toot my own horn, but what I state is fact. As a small arms trainer I learned to recognize shooter with exceptional natural skills. I usually went out of my way to encourage them, and to steer them for my shipboard security force. I have younger family members now as well as one of the neighbors kids who are or have the potential to be great hunters. Post shtf I will pass some things on. I have always stated down here I learned early where my skills lay. I tell people that I am a hog hunter. I hunt hogs on purpose, and kill deer by accident. If it gets up close, it is probably, in fact, most likely, meat for the pot. I don't use or need dogs to hunt hogs or deer. I prefer not to hunt that way. So dog feed is not a problem. Last I will repeat myself, the swamps will weed out the vast majority of the potential hunters. The swamp is my friend. I learned not to fear the swamp, but to make it work for me. I will spot and train hunters from my tribe with potential to "getter done". just saying

One thing to consider - die off. A vast majority of people will not leave the cities until it is too late. Couple die off (estimated at 75-80% within 3 months of a total collapse, 90+% within 6 months) with the fact that it will be mostly city dwellers (many of whom are not competent hunters anyhow), and you have a non-issue for pressure on a wildlife population, outside of competent and well practiced hunters.

You will, if you are not wise, see direct pressure locally. Many small towns have large numbers of relatively competent hunters. These folks will hunt the game around their townships and place a large pressure on those populations. However, when human activity ceases in the burbs and the outlaying areas of the cities, game and wildlife will move in.

If you are sufficiently isolated, and consider one good sized deer will feed a family of 5 for about a month (if they prepare and preserve the meat properly), you will need to take approximately 12 deer a year to keep your family in game meat.

The other thing is, many folks either already have or will acquire livestock such as goats, chickens, ducks, fish (from local ponds and lakes), and raise them as a primary source of protien. This is not inclusive of gardening and harvesting "wild" fruits and nuts from your local environs.

The smart prepper is already self sufficient in the meat department, or should be working towards that goal. Game should be culled to keep the populations in your local area manageable - mostly hogs in Texas, but deer also - because they can and will destroy your crops. My group views those culls as bonus meat and hides. It will be used for dog feed, long term storage meat, leather, and basically a treat every now and again.

Game animal populations will not suffer long, if at all. Populations grow rapidly with limited predation. Once the human die-off has ended, there will be a plethora of game (as long as the local area can support the game).

Game animals around your BoL or BiL should not be placed under undue pressure because your preps should include domestic meat animals. Even if you are basically in the "burbs" you can raise rabbits and chickens. Rabbits breed, well, like rabbits. Chickens are insanely useful on many levels, meat, eggs, feathers, and bones for vitamin and mineral rich stock.

I think the only way, like mentioned above, that hunting would be an option is if a very high % of the population dies off.

Another thing to consider is what will people be willing to do if food is scarce and you are both hunting limited game in the same area.

I think after any initial disaster having food stores is the best option to get past the first year without depending on any sort of harvesting or hunting, not that you don't want to exercise those options if you can just don't depend on it 100% for survival at first.

I think that as times get bad game animals will disappear. In the 80's the spotted owl thing here put loggers out of work. I know one guy who was taking a deer a week to feed the extended family. As pressure is put on game animals they hide. Its not hunting season now and I drove buy 100 elk coming home 2 days ago. During hunting season all you see is empty fields and if you are lucky a couple very nervous cow elk.

My plan is to fill the canning jars with stew meat as I think it is going bad. I dont think game will be that plentiful. I can also guarantee that Uncle Sugar and company will close the woods, lack of security or some such to keep the revolutionary's or criminals from hiding or some other BS.

Control the food control the people.

I'd say those that "guard" the woods against revolutionaries et al are apt to join the game in the canning. Or something like that.

The body needs a balanced diet for optimal nutrition.

A diet virtually exclusively of lean meated game is probably not going to be good long term. The body requires some fats and oils to metabolise food, and metabolising proteins low in fats will result in the body using its own stores of fats to do the job.

Lean game meats will need to be supplemented with fats, sugars, carbs, vitamins and minerals (veges)...in other words to stay well nourished and healthy, a balanced diet that accords with the food pyramid is required.

Using oil to cook your meat, or lard will compensate for lack of large amounts of natural fats in the meats. If you are consuming things like (your own) domestic duck, pork, and cattle in addition to the leaner meats your diet should be balanced as far as proteins and fats. Even occasionally eating fish adds balanced fats to your diet that you need. Mal de Caribou comes from exclusive and excessive consumption of lean meats like rabbit, even domestic rabbit.

Keeping fowl like ducks or chickens along with rabbits and consuming the fowl and their eggs provides adequate fats.

Eating one duck egg gives you 15% of your daily allowance of fat.
One whole chicken egg provides 37% of your daily needs for fat.
One pound of raw chicken contains 194% of your daily allowance for fat (meat and skin included)
One pound of raw duck contains 174% of your daily allowance for fat (meat and skin included).

You get the picture. Additionally, when examining rabbit meat, or any meat for that matter, you need to account for any fats or oils you use in cooking (2 Tbsp. of olive oil contains 42% of your daily fat needs). So consume salads with oil based dressings with your roast rabbit 2 times a day, and you are golden.

Oils and fats should be part of your preps anyhow.

Mal de Caribou typically afflicts explorers and other cold-weather adventurers who attempt to live on hunted animals but only eat the muscle tissue. Eating carbs helps short-term. Consuming the marrow found in larger animal bones, like deer, and consuming the deer fat along with the meat, will go far to stave off malnutrition. Crack the large bones (like the legs) and scoop out the fatty goodness inside. Let us not forget the fats and nutrition locked inside the "offal" - brains, heart, liver etc. Brains and eggs, Roasted deer heart, venison liver and onions, venison pate and crackers. This goes for ducks, chickens, rabbits and other game animals as well. The offal is a storehouse of nutrition.

We Americans, on the whole, tend to overlook the offal and go for the "choice" bits.

The Inuit, an extreme case of meat eaters, avoid Mal de Caribou by consuming large quantities of fat. 35-40% of their daily calories come from protein, they balance this with 50-70% daily dietary intake of fats.

Nutrition is all about balance. In a perfect world, in a SHTF scenario, none of us would suffer from malnutrition or go hungry at all. This is not a perfect world. That is why we prep and talk about these things here. Hope this helps.
