Gun control at the border Editorial The Obama administration has taken a a small but significant step that could help federal authorities keep weapons sold in the U.S. out of the hands of Mexican gangs and drug cartels. July 17, 2011 The Obama administration took a concrete step toward curbing the flow of semiautomatic weapons to Mexico last week when it adopted a new regulation mandating the reporting of multiple sales of long guns to federal authorities. Under the regulation, some 8,500 licensed gun shops in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas will be required to inform the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives when a customer buys more than one semiautomatic that is .22 caliber or greater within a five-day period.
Yeah that'll work just as well as the limits placed on purchases of Sudafed has worked to stop the manufacture of meth.
"It's a concrete step...." Yep, around the feet of the American gun-owner. But..... "it's for the children.... yeah, that's it!"
So the judge ruled in favor of a regulation unequally applied rather than the law. I can see an appeal, if the lawyers can craft it correctly. The question in my mind is whether the batmen exceeded the authority granted them by the bureaucracy by selectively hitting a few shop owners. Fast and Furious is still an open question as near as I can tell, and trying to cure the illness by hitting on a limited area seems a small and futile attempt to cure the ill. All that local requirement will do is drive the buying further north. Transport to the border is a trivial matter, even from (say) Maine. So the nationwide policy is next, obviously. Behead the batman, says me.
What I've not been able to understand is why we give a crap whether cartels buy weapons here anyways. Even if it were possible to stop (and it aint) what would they do? They'd call up their comrades in Columbia and say 'These gringo's won't let us get any semi automatic rifles could you ship us a couple crates of full automatic weapons.'
Why would they go to all that trouble, when they can bribe a local Federalie, and get all the Fullauto Weapons from the Mexican Government.... I mean Really.... Duh...
So now the suppliers have to wait to buy more than one long gun. Is that going to stop or slow any crime? Let's say we stopped all weapons from migrating south, is that going to have any effect on the ease with which those people can migrate north uncontested? When will our government learn, Wars on "subject" are not successful simply because they aren't able to control the actions of everyone... yet. Tango
As it stands, the regulation is in place. My local (small business) gun shop owner has confirmed that they have to report if multiple weapons (long guns or handguns) in a 5 day period are purchased by an indvidual - that being more than 1 weapon of either type.
So is it confirmed to be say long guns in general and not simply tracking 'assault' type weapon sales?
So, to avoid uncomfortable scrutiny by the Boyz-in-Black, we are being limited to four guns a month....... Getting closer to their long-awaited one-gun-a-month limit the antis want to put on us. Then it'll be one gun a year. Then......?
Maybe the Federal Judge should have placed restrictions onthe BATFE from giving full autos away instead of worrying about semi-auto owners buying more wps. Only enhances my lack of respect for the District of Criminals/Comunists. Getting to be time to head for the hills.
