im gonna saw off 12 inch long chunks of 4 inch oilwell casings
weld them onto 8 inch squares of 1/2 inch plate with a 2 foot length of 1/2 inch pipe
stickin straight out the other side of the plate
the 1/2 in pipe will serve as an anchor when i drive it into the ground or the side of a small hill, a small primer hole near the base of the 4 inch pipe that i can fir wire thru
and its ready to rock n roll, just add powder, wadding and rocks, glass or nails
lead the wire to a car battery with a simple switch to flip when the time comes

For me, I'm going to go with my Colt M4 Commando with Surefire 60 round mags.

I'm kinda of the opinion that, if at all, one should only carry a single 60 rounder in the weapon for dealing with the initial threat, getting to cover etc. The rest carried ought be lesser capacity. Of course I live in Ohio and according the asshats in Columbus loading a weapon with more than 31 rounds turns it into a machine gun LOL.

    Does it really matter?
We all fall under federal gun control laws.
All gun control laws are unconstitutional.
When my rights are being violated, the extent to which they are violated is kinda a moot point.

In my inventory right now, my SHTF grab and go weapon(s) are.....My AR CQB rifle, and my go bag with the 1911 and plenty of goodies packed in around it.

Keeping my eyes open for the right deal on a good tactical 12ga. to round out the choices.

Those who carry that kind of load out are called mules and they usually carry the SAW. :D

AR´s and Lever Action .30-30 are high on my list of desireable SHTF guns.

AK too, but i don´t have experience with them...

When buggin in and laying low, a suppressed .22 rifle is hard to beat as a quiet (small) game taker. I´ve heard poachers even shoot deer with .22´s but you´d really have to be near it i think, 30-50yards tops and go for the head... unless you got yourself a hunting dog or like to search for it for several hours....

As far as ideal... well... no such critter as an ideal gun for everything, but i think i´d be quite ok with an AR, with high quality back up iron sights, a small red dot with spare batt´s and a CMMG .22nconversion unit.

That way you´d have a rifle that is well suited for defense and good for small to medium game. (that´s ok in my location, if you have large predators and game around, like bears/grizzlies or zombie elephants it´d be not as good)

I could make do with that setup but ideally, there´d be a whole gun safe to choose from... :)

depends on situtation, got a AR, glock17,but for home defense a hr pardner 12ga with many types of shells paid 170.00 new and have shot the crap out of it and has been flawless, one of my favorites now.

Both of them are loaded and ready for action BTW... Got ta love them large bores...

Okay enough silliness... out where I am I doubt I'll see a fire fight... just to far away from the nearest big city... therefore my hunting rifles will do me just fine..

Ditto on nothing but 4 legged critters here; however, when I travel an AK folder or AR with a telescoping stick.

After more concideration and watching this thread for quite a while I am thinking that I may have my ideal gun.
An AR-15 lower with a multiple position stock and a selection of uppers. I have AR's from .22LR to .50 Beowulf and each one serves a great purpose.

Then there's shotguns, lever guns, and a bunch of bolt actions to choose from...........DAMMIT!! There is NO ideal gun.........BUY ALL OF THEM!!

How boring would life be if you stood before your gun cabinet and had only the "ideal" gun in there. I spend an hour in the evening before going out hunting looking at weather maps and conditions just to choose the right rifle to take out with me the next day.

Half the fun of owning guns is selecting the right tool for the job.

I have needed a gun many times in my adult life as a LEO and can state without a second thought that the perfect gun is the one you have when you need one.

So true and so many factors even if the job is punching holes in paper. Wind, glare, mirage, overcast, etc all help decide.

As a retired Marine I too can say I have found myself in need of a weapon ready to hand, more times than I care to count... I can also say more often than not you dont realize you just walked into a firefight until after someone is shooting at you... then things happen damn fast.

Training and lots of practice... doesn't matter what you own... just so it's used under pressure becomes second nature.... no thought just action, or maybe reaction...

The ideal gun is the one in your hand provided it has proven reliable & accurate enough. If you catch me unarmed I must be in bed with my GF, but don't think a gun is more than an arm's length away even then. You just can't see it.

Probably an AK of any make, super reliable peasant rifle, can double as a tent stake. Me and a close friend have this conversation a lot.
