guys like to think that they can make their .45 do the carbine's job, but I"ve seen world champ ISPC shottists miss the entire torso target,at a mere 10 yds, just because they were trying to draw and hit faster than me! That was in good light, with ear and eye protection, on stationary, fully exposed targets, and nobody trying to kill them. you can just forget the pistol being effective, when it's for real, beyond about 5 yds, unless it's an ambush thing, on one man, from cover, using eye and ear protection, a braced firing position. then you MIGHT want to risk it from 25 yds or so. So the pistol for shtf is a 1 lb pocket 9, with just one spare mag and ammo for both mags. Practice will be out of the question, the noise will call in your killers.
it is silly to predicate 5-6 lbs of 1911, 230 gr ammo, 6 spare mags, mag pouches, holster, etc. Far better to have that wasted 4 lbs be realized in spare ammo for the rifle or the .22lr unit, in water, in better clothing, you know, something USEFUL.
the reason guys want a big pistol is they want a rifle and ammo that are too bulky and heavy to have at hand all the time, a slow assed bolt action, etc. If they'd keep an M4 on the assault sling, they'd have a proper tool for being attacked, not a joke like the pistol is! The pistol is for when you are in your sleeping bag, crawling in a tunnel, climbing a ladder or a tree, or confined in a vehicle, and that's it. It is GROSSLY inferior to a good carbine, at ranges beyond a very few feet.
Yeah, and Little Johnny's carbine is GROSSLY inferior to a proper rifle at ranges beyond a couple hundred yards.
He could have a point if dont have any idea on what your doing to begin with to purchasse better fire power would be a waste of funds. Atleast if you bought clothes you would look nice at your funeral.

I have the feeling that if this child had a living brain cell he would probably spray it with insecticide.
