There's no such thing in the legal system as a 'technicality'. It's either the law or it isn't. Sometimes what you may call 'technicalities' save innocent people from wrongful prosecution, such as cases being overturned for wrongful search & seizure, evidence based on hearsay, or denial of other rights to the defendant.
There may be a gray area there in some cases, but they are not working on these cases by claiming that their monster clients are innocent. They are purely motivated by trying to get the sentences thrown out.
