I'm new to guns, survival mindset, etc. I'm wondering what all of you more knowledgeable types consider a good selection of firearms to handle whatever needs to be done. Of course I'd love to have a dozen, but every dollar I put here is one I can't spend on other areas that are just as important. I'd like to see a general list of what you think, than thoughts and comments about my current guns and what needs to be added. I have xdm 9 mm bushmaster carbine with strikefire vortex red dot Benelli nova 12 guage Savage 12 series .308 I'm probably getting a 22 rifle next, any specific suggestions for that? Right now I'm torn between the classic ruger 10/22 and the Savage mark ii. Love the trigger on the savage, but I don't know if i'd be better off with a semi auto or not.
A collection of $100 (.22 cal.) rifles is a very good idea. I frequent my local gun shops and always pick one up if the budget allows. There are all kinds of great .22's out there. I personally prefer the older types, due to their ruggedness and quality. I own a Savage Mark II bolt action .22 rifle, which is one of only two new models I own. The other is a Ruger 10/22. My favorite .22 rifle is the Mossberg 151K, a hard to find item and worth every penny...I paid about $100 for it. That's a good assortment you have now. My only suggestion is to work on the .22 family.
Absulutely nothing wrong with you selections, so far, and again, nothing wrong with a Ruger 10/22, for a nice 22LR weapon. It would be my preference to get that next, and then start thinking about a REAL handgun for your next purchase after that.... You have the Long Guns pretty well covered...
I've standardized on caliber, 9mm, .380 (for concealed carry), .223, .270, and .22 Only got one .223 and .270, and the Bushmaster is a NICE gun. My budget will probably only allow a Keltec, like the SU-16D for CQC. Would like to setup caches of weapons and ammo, but that requires a good bit of redundancy. I could potentially need any or all of my firearms at a moments notice, and being buried at a semi-remote location isn't going to do any good. Maybe just some ammo, though, and keep enough for target practice and a short term survival scenario. Something to think about.
Actually, My comment is really irrelevant, in that I put the first two lines together as a single weapon, MY MISTAKE, and I apologize.... Just did a Google, and NOW understand that your Short Arm class is covered. In retrospect, with that now understood, maybe a Ruger .22LR Pistol could round out your Short Arm collection. Other than that, Looks fine to this Monkey...
I own a Savage Mk II and love it. Can't go wrong with either one, although the Ruger will run you a little more cash. And with the spare cash you save by buying a Savage, you can buy more ammo. I prefer the Savage myself, but the aftermarket for the Ruger has it beat hands down. Both are reliable and accurate. Take your pick as either one will do you just fine. But round out your firearms toolbox with a .22 rifle. That above all is probably the most mandatory firearm you should own.
The xdm is a great pistol, and all your others are great selections. The 10/22 is a good choice for your next puchase, Maybe get an ar-10 in .308 to pack a little more punch for that area. the only other thing I would do would be buy as many mags as you can for the Bushmaster, the Ruger 10/22 and said ar-10 ( By the way DPMS makes a fantastic .308, and you cannot go wrong there). Then the other thing would be Ammo build a good stock of what you shoot and do yourself a huge Favor and Learn to reload your own ammo, then get everything you can to build a good stockpile of ammo.
I think you are all set up for shtf as well. a 9mm for carry without drawing attention to yourself ( don't let any of the .45 crowd tell you it is not a real gun a 9mm XDm is great ), .308 for long range and or big game, Benelli for gees/duck/close combat, bushmaster for combat and mid to small game (head shots on rabbits, squirrels etc preferred ). My suggestion might sound a bit strange: pellet gun for small game without noise and drawing attention to yourself. I also agree with lots of ammo and mags and the Ruger 10/22 being a great gun, CZ has a super nice .22 also. I would lean toward bolt action for .22 it will be more hunting rifle than anything else... that said plinking with a 10/22 and drum mag will be insane amounts of cheap(ish) fun until the shtf situation occurs. the scope is whatever cheapo came with the package deal. It's on my list of things to upgrade, but it will have to do for the immediate future.
Not strange at all! Sounds like a great idea but I haven't shot a pellet gun in a couple of decades. Any recommendations for gun brand and pellet type(s)?
With your curret selection...I doubt that your new to gun's...However you do seem to know what you want for your need's and your selection is very nice...Carry on..
all those have been purchased in the year or so. I never owned a gun, then spent a year in afghanistan. That changed my attitude! I got to design 3 different ranges over there and made a deal with the good sergeant major I'd build them If I could shoot at them. and I'm a geek, I love reading and researching, so each of those was bought after about 3 months of studying up on that particular gun.

"cheap nerd"?? Outstanding! LOL Sounds like you're off to a great start. I heartily recommend the Ruger 10/22 as your "pot provider" weapon. Cheap (I got my 2 for about $140 each, but they came with scopes and "goodies"). Then I got the extended magazine releases and slings. Wowzers! Excellent little weapons! Try and find an Appleseed shoot in your area. They'll start you on your way to being a Rifleman! Inexpensive, use the 10/22, learn tons about shooting and Revolutionary War history. A great weekend! I'm new here, but I have to say I disagree with the 10/22 suggestion. While any .22 rifle is far better than none, I've had literally hundreds of 10/22's through my hands as an Appleseed Project instructor. Like any other magazine fed semi-auto, they are terribly prone to failure, except for the factory magazines, which are awesome. But the mags don't make up for mediocre accuracy, ammo pickiness and marginal out of the box reliability. And, you've got to spend some serious coin to get a decent trigger, and a mag release that actually works. For an Appleseed, they're good, for a SHTF gun, not so much. For dead nuts reliability and function, I've found that a Henry lever gun is the way to go. Large magazine capacity, flawless function, and goes bang every time.
Well there is the fact that You are only going to use the 10/22 for hunting small game, I think it is a fine gun for just that....This is why i suggested the dpms semiauto in 308 for self defence,besides his 223 bushmaster. Though I do like your selection of a henry lever action for hunting, that again i would not use it as a self-defence gun. but a henry in .30-30 is a great Deer gun.
(for all the "experts" out there giving advice) WHO CARES? use whatever you want! Go hunting with a freaking AIRSOFT rifle for all I care!!! I don't control your life! I care NOT! Sometimes I really hate forums. There is nothing wrong with the Ruger 10/22. I don't care if you are a person who has instructed Chuck Norris, get a clue. In fact, not all weapons are made the same. Why give such advice in the first place, seriously? When I was in the Army, I experienced more jams and misfires on the ranges than I ever did any place else. Am I going to go around protesting the use of all AR platform rifles? No, that would be silly. I am not trying to be rude, here. I just don't want folks to think they can get away with giving crap advice.
