Rossi tuffy 410 as a survival weapon?

I have a Rossi tuffy 410 I just bought for my survival weapon.
What are some good shot sizes I should buy b4 I head in to the woods?
It has a modified choke barrel and says 3 inch , can I shoot a smaller size shell then 3 inch?

YMMV but in my opinion light game loads don't consistently get it done with the 410. I would stick with 3 inch high brass loads in #6 or #4 for small game. Slugs, and buckshot for larger game, and special designed anti personnel rounds for self defense along with slugs and buckshot.

 

I was thinking

# 7 1/2 - small game
# bb - medium game
000 or 0000. Buck - Large game / defense

Has any one used the 0000 buck

 

If the bolt under the fore grip unscrews, after it's out you pull off the grip and then release the brake barrel and it comes right out

 

It's been a long time since I hunted with a 410. ..... 45 to 50 years, and ammo may have improved considerably, but 7 1/2 didn't get it done on rabbits consistently. #6 did. gray squirrels were okay with #6 also, but to roll those big fox squirrels out of the top of a tree, #4 was called for. All of the above in 3 inch high brass.

 

This reminds me...I picked up a Rossi I hadn'e seen before at a garage sale a few months back.

It's in a pouch sorta like a Marlin Papoose, but is sigle shot and has .410 and .22lr barrels. Fun little thing and dead on accurate at short range.

Anyone know what it is?

Not over/under...detachable barrels...one of each.

Actually, it looks quite a bit like the Tuffy, but with a wood stock with no grip or thumbhole and 2 interchageable barrels.

 

Hate to rain on the parade here but instead of a 410, a 22 semi would be much better.

 

I got a Saiga .410 that's a lot of fun to shoot with 10 round magazines and I have a Spanish made .410 side by side and a Winchester model 12 .410 that is death to all quail but I would never consider them anything but very specialized weapons for somebody with disposable income and way too much time on their hands.

 

One of my buddies has the Rossi with two barrels and the vinyl case. His is .17HMR and 20 gauge though. Very tight shooter with the .17HMR, even though open-sighted.

My .410 is the old Stevens singleshot bolt-action. Looks much like a .22 rifle. I use a camera pouch with belt loop as an ammo pouch. Works well and was cheap. I also favor high-brass #6 - it's been my smallgame 'go to' load for all shotgun gauges.

Sorry, never thought "two barrels" would be taken as over/under...just never crossed my mind.

Not sure what I am going to do with it, but saw it at a garage sale for $75 and couldn't resist...had never seen one.

I believe the name is the papoose. I bought one for my grand kids when the first one was born. It's a nice outfit.

Mine is a Little different than the one in Borker post. Mine doesn't have the lock and the sight on the one in the picture are better than the one I have.
