I just got an email about the rapidly disappearing matches we all know and love.
I was told that due to "provisions" in the "Patriot Act" ( I love the ACT part!), that the matches are being discontinued due to their nature, being able to "light" fairly easily, they are now considered to be "hazardous material"? Anyone heard that before? What a CROCK!
Now, I just went to the diamond match companies site, and lo and behold, they have changed ( green, and srike on the box now!) and if you research them even on Amazon they are saying no longer in stock and my not be able to get any more in the future!???
What the hey? I mean seriously ,...they are really outlawing matches? What next? Toy balloons?
Ok, I can see where the matches may be hazardous, BUT if that stupid, moronic, freckled faced kid, loading the boxes would learn how to STACK and NOT throw them, then maybe the problem would be a LOT less?
Most of us (older juvinile delinquents) know all about matches, making rockets and even clothes pin guns....They are matches and they BURN after all. Next they'll take away the clothes pins and paper clips too!
    My instinct is simple:
Some old guy ratted us out!
NOW, They know what can be done in the way of making shall we say ( a tad bit cynical here) specific items with those match heads? They can be ( and it has been tested) used to refill those old used primer cups too!
    Next....?

This started years ago. They disappeared from the "picnic" section of the local grocers, and the only place I could find them was Ace Hardware stores......and even then, they have reduced the amount of the white material on the tip to the point they just about WON'T strike "anywhere".

I noticed the tip was smaller and I figured they were "saving money" that way. I used to get them at the local Fry's grocery store, but no more, only the strike on the box types ( work great when they get wet!) I still find them at all the ACE hardwares around here but the prices are steadily going up!
    ( like nothing else has?)

Yeah I've noticed Diamond matches(and the box) are changing. Nearly missed 'em on the shelf last time we bought some.

If you live in Texas, you can get them at HEB, their brand, and they DO strike anywhere, still.

Can't Even Take Matches For Granted

If "strike anywhere matches" get restricted or made less reliable, I guess all of us will simply have to get more serious about the other fire starting methods that are discussed elsewhere on Survival Monkey.

And, it seems like buying/learning the alternative methods will be better done sooner rather than later.

I buy strike anywhere matches every chance I get. I shoot them out of BB guns because they explode when the hit. They also are handy for reloading .22 rimfire cartridges and making IEDs.

A few years back, I bought several large packs of them at our local Publix grocery. Glad I did - now Publix no longer carries them! I usethe 'regular' Strike-On-Box type for day to day use, saving these better types.
Another problem is the Strike-On-Box type have the new 'dotted' style of striker - it wears away far too quickly. Half the box can't be struck, as the 'stuff' on the side is gone!

Ya know to me its not even about the matches, to me its about the regulations. I myself don't like to be lorded over like I'm some stupid back woods inbred that barely knows how to tie there freaking shoes. That I can assure you that I am not......I may be a redneck, but I am not stupid and i do not need what I can and cant use to be dictated to me by a bunch of born with a silver spoon in there mouths, elitists telling me how to live. I am not nor will I ever be their slave. If I die at the hands of these people, so be it. But I will go down with a fight, and rest assured when they die I will meet them at the eastern gate so I can drag then to the throne room by there ears so I can hear there judgement that is delivered to them by the almighty God, and wave Buh-bye to them as they dissapear to where they so rightfully belong.

That's the whole problem...political morons dictating to us because they KNOW what is best for us! They are not looking out for OUR best interests, just abusing their powers we gave them, by voting them in!
Too bad we can't just fire the suckers!

We The People CAN fire these simpering buffoons and buffettes, IF we can get past the "Bought&Paid For" Entitlement Crowd.

If people receiving Government Assitance were not allowed to vote, we could do good things for this nation. But those with 'conflicts of interest' keep getting in our way. [loco]

I really would support a bill to make it a law to prove citizenship to vote. Also a simple civics test before you could even get in the polling place to vote. 10 questions.... and a maditory score of 70 to pass. 3 tries under a certain ssn and if you had not yet got a 70..... just take your stupid butt back home. Give that person a "I'm too stupid to vote" sticker! 5000 simple multiple choice questions to randomly be chosen from so the test would be different for everyone, and every try. Questions like, "who was the first US President?", "Who is the present Vice President?", "you have to _______ to Vote.... a. have a drivers license, b. pay taxes, c. be a US citizen, d. swear allegiance to political party.......

How about "Only tax-payers are allowed to vote!" Cut out the riffraff who are totally dependent on the Liberal Party for their support.
If one has a vested interest in trying to lower taxes and raise his/her family on their own earnings, I believe they'd be more careful who they vote for.

At one time, only 'land-owners' could vote, but there are too many good upstanding citizens (of all poliical persuasions) that rent or lease their homes. That was me up until ten years ago.

I guess that would imply you approve of the social security system, and the use of a number as an identification system.

The card I was issued when I signed up clearly states across the bottom:

NOT TO BE USED FOR THE PURPOSES OF IDENTIFICATION

.....and yet, here we are......to the point when I took my dog to a vet, and fill out the paperwork, leaving that space blank, the girl/kid behind the desk asks in a sing-song voice "and DO you KNOW your SS number"......well hell yes I KNOW it.....so what ?

Are you here to treat my dog or is this a branch of the SS administration in disguise ?

AND I "gotta" have an SS# to get a driver's license....really ? why ? What has my old age pension number got to do with my ability to drive ?? Couldn't I give you my GOA membership number instead ?

Well the fact is, I have had a number of one sort or another attached to me and my name for so long it is the least of my worries. All military members now have their SSN as their service number. My first service number was not my SSN. I had it drilled into my head to the point, I still know that number. No numbers are tatooed on my body anywhere. I am no fan of the IRS, the DMV, and many other government agencies that require a number for ID. However, I am enough of a realist to understand we have a real problem controlling our porous borders and the millions of illegal aliens within our borders. I believe there are a number of privledges to being an American that should be reserved for citizens of this country. Merely being here does not make you a citizen! If you do not believe that, then there is no reason to continue this discourse. I welcome hearing your ideas on the illegal alien problem. It seems to me that some form of positive picture ID is required to get control of this problem. What do you consider other acceptable options? Numbers attached to your name are a way of life here. Certain benefits are dependent on it. No number, no benefit, your choice. But the thing is most people only know how to complain and few have solutions to offer to solve various problems. Yes, I have no major problem with the Real ID Act. Do FEMA camps actually exist? I don't know. If they do, then lets get serious about the Illegal Alien problem, and round them up. Hold them there until they can be sent home.

At one point, passports also used the SSN as ID, as did several states for driver's licenses. That, too, has stopped or was made optional, one can opt out (which I did.)

I guess I can see some advantages to a unique number that is used for several purposes, at least for getting the data across agency lines. That is exactly why I don't like it. Some dolt in (say) the Boise cop shop looks up "my" number after a traffic stop and reads my medical records, finds how I broke a toe in 1990, then sells that fact to a shoe salesman that spams me. You want me to have a number for your records? OK, assign one. I WILL forget it, you are going to have to use my name anyway to find it.

The "Real ID" act is fuzzy, but I can say that a single number for all purposes doesn't make me happy. Comes to that, names won't be needed at all. [xxx-yy-zzzz was born on qq/ww/vv to xx1-y2-z1zz and 2xx-bb-ccc1 (who, of course, were not married.)]

For those of you that don't know this, Medicare also uses your SSN. That gripes me no end; it wouldn't take much effort for a medical records clerk with a bit of computer knowledge to get some info they don't need for medical purposes. These offerings for medical records training do NOT include ethics as part of the curricula (as if it made any difference.)

In wayback times (before even I was born) a man's word was good enough for who he was. That is not true today, there are entirely too many people walking around that haven't enough honor in their souls to fill a thimble without leaving space for a thumb. Like it or not, until retina and/or thumb print scanners get into common use, numbers and picture IDs are what we have. No picture ID, automatic assumption of illegality, and you work the chain gang until your cot and tent time and cost of transporting you out of the country are paid off. (YEA, JOE!! Please send a few road crews up here to fix the potholes.)

Now, somebody has to tell me how we got here from Strike Anywhere Matches. They are still available around here, but you have to look for 'em.

Without a doubt. And apparently, it's NOT a problem to the Globalists in DC.....or they would put a real effort into stopping it. All they would have to do is two things:

    1. Monitor folks that come on on visa's and "disappear"...if you come in on a visa, you check in once a month with some govt office, or your name goes on a wanted list. Miss one check in, get caught, and you get deported immediately with no future visa. This is actually a small portion of the problem.

    2. The border crossers: They only come for economic reasons. So FINE THE CRAP out of anyone that employs an illegal. And use the existing SSAN system to find folks using numbers illegally. HOW does a 25year old guy get a number ? How does a person dead 10 years suddenly "start working again" ? Simply monitoring the existing system would cut out about 99% of existing mis-use.

Again, we are in agreement. What REALLY pisses me off is I, as a citizen, have to furnish SSAN, photo ID, etc, to open a bank account, but somebody from Mexico can waltz in, holler "no englash", and not only NOT have to come up with the same documentation, but the frigging bank will provide his ass a translator !

Acceptable options to ME would be separate numbers.

My DL # doesn't need to be my SS #.....nor does my fishing license number need to be linked to my SSAN, nor does that twit girl behind the vet counter need my SSAN.....they serve entirely different functions, and the ONLY purpose to use ONE NUMBER for everything is so that BIG BROTHER can easily compile huge databases on every single person ( except, of course, for illegals ) FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONTROL.

SO, my solution is go back to what we had before.

The illegal alien problem would easily be solved simply using State DL number, OR a photo ID issued BY THE STATE, and not linked in any manner nationally. After all, you actually ARE NOT "an American" ( except loosely termed ), you ARE a citizen of one of the 50 STATES, or territories.
