I finally got around to ordering my vegetable garden seed stash. 54 pounds of open pollinated heirloom seed from www.Willhiteseed.com . I had received a wishbook from them some time ago, and was impressed by the fact you can buy in bulk, vice a tiny packet. You select the size package of seed that works for you. Seed ain't cheap, but buying in bulk gives mental comfort for possible post SHTF scenerios. You all might want to consider checking this company out if you live south of the mason dixon line. They are in Texas.

Where are you getting the quinoa and how much are you paying for it? I'm trying to find it online and the best I can do is $65 for 25# plus another $18 for shipping.

I gave my stepson an AR15 and a 1911 along with several magazines. I bought another 200 lbs red wheat and a Magic Mill flour mill. Also ordered a Cuisanart Stainless breadmaker.

well thats the best price I have seen. I paid 99.00 for mine today. I just wanted to get it into jars and not wait. ugh thats so expensive. I also found some giant mason jars today, never seen this size before, I put all my quinoa into them and put in oxygen absorbers in to.

Do you want me to dig up the place where I found it online for $85 shipped to our doorstep? Giant mason jars are great for storing dehydrated potatoes. I'd like to get more 1/2 gallon jars myself but I hardly ever see them and when I do they want like $12 for 6 of them. They're not so good for canning though.... too high of a risk of food poisoning in that size. Probably good for storing fermented foods I'd think.

I love those giant jars! I plant to put my tvp in them to, and I paid 10.99 for 6 of them but will be going back tomorrow to get 6 more. Im also going to try doing my quinoa in the thermos tomorrow, I love the stuff, just never seem to get time in the morning to cook it. so Im taking the thermos to work filled with it :) looking to have quinoa for lunch!
I also have to try my canning this weekend, Im not doing anything but can if I can!

The dehydrator I bought and only treied to use one time went bonkers, so the seller gave me my money back and says he will send me a new dehydrator, today I got my money back and bought two really good ones so I can do double time dehydrating.( total cost 120.00 the money plus shipping ) I got back 119.00 from the seller out of pocket 1.00 oh and he is sending me a new one, but Im not going to use it, its pretty much like the other one only a deluxe and Im sticking to the nesco as they have always been the best for me. will be running both full time now for veggies and fruits!

I researched the shelf life of soft grains stored in buckets with one 200cc oxygen absorber added PER gallon and found that the site I linked to above appeared to have the most accurate information.

I'm glad you're going back to the dehydrator method. I think dehydrated foods are superior to canned goods nutritionally because of the considerably lower processing temps with the added benefit of having a longer shelf life if stored properly. The Nesco dehydrators seem to work just fine. I'm borrowing one for a workshop I'm going to be doing in the community this June. They're easy to get our hands on.... reasonably priced.... can easily handle the quantity of produce generated from a home garden and.... I know the attendees can't afford the Excaliber I use. I'm also bringing two non-electric DIY dehydrators with me along with assembly handouts. I feel they need to be made aware they can dehydrate their garden produce without incurring the expense of store bought dehydrators. Electric dehydrators are convenient for sure and I'm using mine pert near daily but.... not necessary.
